Author

Gaurish Borkar

Mr. Gaurish Borkar was first introduced to Vedic astrology when he was a teen and got his first degree in astrology when he was just 14. He comes from a traditional family and his grandfather Shree. Haribhau Borkar was well known astrologer from Goa India. Even though Gaurish could not get much guidance from his grandfather as he died when Gaurish was too young, inherited knowledge was always in the blood. Gaurish got guidance from his cousin grandfather for next few years. After practicing Vedic astrology successfully for more than 6 years, Gaurish realized that just ability of accurate prediction is not good enough but ability to provide a solution is more important. Therefore, he started learning various remedial measures like Reiki, gemmology, hypnosis and NLP along with traditional remedial measures. He started his practice of Vedic astrology again after studying various remedial measures for more than 16 years. Now days he enjoys to evolve people and help them to achieve their goals, rather than just predicting their future.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE my friend Mr Umesh Shejwalkar with whom I spent hundreds of hours discussing various topics in Vedic Astrology. I also want to thank him for reviewing the book and providing detailed feedback that helped to make the first edition of this book more readable and accurate. I want to acknowledge my old friend Mr Dharmendra Sharma for designing the cover of the book as a token of his love toward me. I cannot forget many of my clients who put faith in me even though I was young enough to be ignored as a professional astrologer. I want to acknowledge my family (wife and daughter) for giving me enough time to research and write this book.

Conventions Used in this Book to Convert Savskruth (Sanskrit) words into English

Savskruth is a phonetic language and it has specific sounds. Unfortunately, not all those sounds are available in English. Due to this limitation, everyone tries to find the nearest sound while converting the Savskruth word into English. We plan to follow certain rules for the sake of consistency. In Savskruth, sounds are grouped by the part or muscle of the mouth or face exercised to pronounce the sound. For example, Pa or Pha is considered as sound exercising lips (Oshthya) and Tha is considered as a sound exercising teeth (Dhantya). Certain conventions used to convert Savskruth sounds in English don’t give proper pronunciation because the group of a sound is changed while conversion. Generally, ta is replaced by ta (T). However, ta and T are from different groups. ta, is Dantya (pronounced by touching the tongue to teeth) and T (ta) is Moordhnya (pronounced by rolling the tongue). Therefore, we have replaced it with another sound from the same group, for example, qa or tha. The Southern part of India follows this methodology for years but many aren’t sure why this convention was followed and they feel it is incorrect. Hence, I wanted to explain it here before following this convention.

Another rule is about Anuswar or dot on any letter. Take an example of the word Sanskrit. Word Sanskrit is grammatically incorrect. The rule says that use an Anunasik (generally last sound) from the same group (Varga) on which the Anuswar is to be given. For example, in the case of Savskruth, Anuswar is on Sa. Sound Sa is from Ya Varga. Anunasik for Ya Varga is Va. Therefore, the word is Savskruth and not Sanskrit. I have explained these concepts in depth in my book ‘Eva and Shiva’.

General practice is to use ‘S’ for plurals even though the word is from other languages. For example, we say Grahas as a plural of Graha. In this book, I have kept Graha as Graha for singular as well as plural as we are not used to Savskruth plurals. Ideally, the plural of Graha is Grahaaha.

Unlike any other language, Savskruth follows the maximum number of rules. To maintain the grace of any language we shall follow its rules to the maximum extent. I attempt to maintain the purity of the language and I have followed the above conventions in this book. I highly encourage you to learn the basics of Savskruth as you have an interest in Vedic astrology.

Terms used in the book and their meaning

I have used many terms specific to Vedic astrology in this book. It is intentional. When we learn any subject, we learn terms related to the topic and I would like you all to learn terms specific to Vedic astrology. To ease the challenge, the below table gives a list of the terms and their equivalent. I encourage you to go through the table and keep it handy as you start reading the next chapter.

1. The Purpose

ASTROLOGY IS AN INTERESTING science and many people think that it is mystic. Many principles in Vedhic astrology are not well explained so it is considered as an occult subject. When we know principles, learning and application of principles become easy and accurate. Many times, astrology is taught as a set of rules or principles. However, if we apply them, sometimes they don’t work and we wonder about our ability to apply the knowledge.

As a sincere student of Vedhic astrology, you might have wondered how house allocations were decided or how characteristics of planets or signs were decided. Some of you might already have some idea but may not have details. Generally, scholars take an esoteric approach to understand principles of Vedhic astrology and such an approach is difficult to generalise. This makes the application of principles even more difficult. I want to take a very different approach to explain the principles of Vedhic astrology. I have explained the principles of Vedhic astrology based on sciences like astronomy, biology, medical sciences, psychology and quantum physics.

Just like you, I have been searching for answers to many questions in Vedhic astrology for the last 26 years and could find many of them. Like any other modern science, more questions are still unanswered and I am working on them right now.

Based on my learnings, any astrologer needs to learn basic astronomy as answers to many questions lie in the knowledge of astronomy. Answers of few questions lie in the knowledge of Ayurvedha. Few more have come from spiritual concepts in Indian culture. As I got an opportunity to work in various fields, I could understand a few principles better. This book is a presentation of my answers to many ‘Why’ questions that occur in the mind of a curious student of Vedhic astrology.

Astrology is a practical science. Every horoscope that you see is unique and new to you. Therefore, you start researching the answer to the question using your analytical abilities and information in hand (horoscope). This is very similar to any other life science like psychology. In such cases, if you know the rationale behind principles being applied, the accuracy of predictions and your confidence would increase.

Today, most of the astrologers get this either based on their observations or someone else’s experience and when predictions go wrong, they wonder about their mistake. Then they wait to see an example where they get to understand more about the scenario that they could not predict correctly. Therefore, primarily it becomes a trial and error mechanism. Some astrologers take a statistical approach. The statistical approach is very challenging because it is difficult to collect an appropriate dataset.

The main purpose of this book is to explain Vedhic astrology logically so that it can be extended to new scenarios that were not covered when Vedhic astrology was developed. Another purpose is to explain it in such a way that learning becomes easier and the accuracy of predictions can be increased.

I am sure that once you go through this book, your understanding of the topic shall increase and you may feel much more comfortable while applying many principles in Vedhic astrology. It is possible that you will be able to extend what has been discovered and documented and you may be able to customize it to your cultural background. This is also one of the purposes of this book.

I want to hear from you, your stories and feedback as I need to extend my knowledge further. It is also important for all of us to develop astrology as a science and without everyone’s effort; we may not move in the right direction at a good pace.

The first edition of this book was published 4 years ago in 2016. I received many inputs from esteemed readers. In this second edition, I added a chapter on Bhava Chalith Horoscope. I also updated most of the chapters and restructured the entire book for better understanding and completeness.

2. Who shall read this book?

THIS BOOK IS FOR EVERYONE who has a basic understanding of Vedhic astrology. Anyone can read the first nine chapters and they will like them. For the rest of the chapters, you shall know some basics of reading the horoscope.

All this required content is available in my book ‘Vedic Astrology Practitioner Manual’. You might also find it in most of the books on Vedhic astrology.

If you know some of the basics of astronomy, they will be handy but I plan to cover everything that is required for understanding ideas discussed in this book.

Most important is your curiosity towards the basics and rationale behind Vedhic astrology. If you have applied principles of Vedhic astrology and they have failed then this book might be of utmost help to you. It might give you the exact reason for failure or ideas to search the reason for failure.

Many people are amazed by astrological predictions. Some of them start considering them as miracles or intuitions. Even some astrologers think that they have intuitions and so their predictions are accurate. If you are one of those, this book might help you to rationalize your predictions.

If you are a seasoned astrologer with a fair amount of accuracy, this book shall help you to explain the rationale behind principles. It shall also help you to confirm your principles. In some cases, it might help you to develop new principles.

Kindly DON’T use this book to prove astrology as a science. Before we do that, we need to research on how planets affect us and prove it. Until today, neither science nor astrologers have been able to prove it. I have put forth a theory on how planets affect us in this book for better understanding and it may or may not be accurate. The theory tells us why only planets and constellations are considered for future predictions and not anything else.

This book is NOT for people who believe just intuition is required for astrological predictions. If you have enough intuition then you may predict without any knowledge of astrology. I have seen people who are capable of doing that. Everyone may or may not have enough intuition and some people study astrology for academic purposes. For all of those, this book shall be a good companion.

I dream that everyone reads this book very early in their journey of Vedhic astrology, ramps up very quickly and reduces his or her ramp up time. Secondly, various methods in astrology are validated on similar principles to confirm their effectiveness. Some common basis is applied while developing new astrological principles and finally they are accepted by the scientific world. I dream to get acceptance for astrology in the scientific world.

3. Introduction

THE MAIN PURPOSE OF this book is to explain the rationale behind many principles in Vedhic astrology. Very few books have discussed these in detail.

There are fundamental ideas from Indian culture that apply to Vedhic astrology. We shall learn them first before we learn other things.

A Vedhic astrologer needs to know astronomy well. We will cover relevant ideas from astronomy to make sure we understand them well.

We will start with Sthana or Bhava and learn how Bhava significations were decided. Then we will learn about Graha or planets to understand how Graha significations were decided. Here your knowledge of astronomy will come handy. We will discuss topics like Vakri, Asthangatha and Sthambhi motion of planets. We will also learn different perspectives of Graha Yuddha, Dhrushti and Yoga.

Once we cover Bhava and Graha, we will move our focus to Rashi. We will also contemplate on sign ownership, exaltation and debilitation of planets. We will look at beneficent/malefic planets and friends/enemies. We will learn other properties of planets like colour, gender and portfolio. We will deep dive into the Graha and will learn about Chaya Graha or Nodes. Then we will focus on the conjunction of two planets or Yuthi.

We will learn the technical aspects of Bhava Chalith Kundali to understand the purpose and scenarios generated due to Bhava Chalith Kundali.

After covering Bhava, Graha and Rashi in deep, we will focus on key principles in Vedhic astrology and learn their application. In the area of key principles, we will discuss Yogakaraka and Maraka. We will also talk about Kendhradhipathya Dhosha, Rajayoga, Neechabhanga/Ucchabhanga, Veepareetha Rajayoga and the connection between planets.

I have explained how the above terms were formed, their purpose and application in this book.

Then we shall discuss challenges in Vedhic astrology. Few important things not mentioned in the horoscope. Few topics like Ayanavsha. Finally, I will explain my theory of why planets can tell us about our life accurately and we shall end the book with the next steps.

I also plan to give references from classical texts as and when possible. This will give you enough guidance to continue your studies. I have tried to limit the number of books used for reference but based on the coverage of the topic; I had very little choice to limit them to just one or two.

Overall, this is an interesting journey. In the journey, you
