Breath of Christmas - Linda Mooney

    Chapter 1

Brindle barely paid attention to the vehicles passing her by. As long as she kept with the flow of traffic, she would be okay. Unlike those people challenging the posted speed limit, she was in no hurry to get to her destination. After all, it wasn’t like there was anyone waiting for her when she finally arrived.

Even with another two hours of driving ahead of her, it felt good to be behind the wheel. To be in control. In control of both the car and her life once again. True, this wasn’t her own car. That beloved jalopy had been one of the first things she’d been forced to sacrifice in order to keep up payments on her apartment while she was hospitalized. She’d been damned and determined that one day she’d eventually get to go home.

    And today was that day.

A semi-tractor truck sped by her. She glanced at the speedometer. It had to be going at least ten miles over the limit. Guy probably wants to get his delivery made and be home in time for Christmas with his family, she muttered to herself. Don’t worry about the clock, Brin. Take it slow and steady. You’ll get home long before the sands run out.

It was late afternoon when she finally pulled into Templeterry. At first glance the small town didn’t appear any different from when she’d left it seven years ago.

Pulling up to Carter’s Hardware, she stopped and checked the map for directions to the rental agency. The downtown area may not look like time had touched it, but it was evident there’d been some growth on the north side.

Just to appease her curiosity, she lowered the window to stare at the profusion of decorations. Across the street, in the middle of the square, the yearly Christmas tree sat festooned with lights. Ornaments made by the children at the elementary school almost covered the enormous spruce, and she smiled. She remembered how, two decades ago, she’d learned how to shellac her own handmade ornaments under her teacher’s watchful eyes. She recalled how proud she’d been when later that week she’d found her personal creation sitting on the tree.

An errant snowflake drifted down from the sky to rest on top of the side mirror. What she could smell of the brisk air told her there would more snow tonight. Possibly even through Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

That would be wonderful. To have it snow on the holiday. It would be perfect.

    The perfect ending.

That second thought, tagging itself on the end, bit into her consciousness like a burr that she could never be rid of. Tears threatened to rise, but she fought them back. She couldn’t cry. She couldn’t allow herself to become emotional. If she did, there was the chance she could suffocate because she wouldn’t be able to catch her breath.

Brindle dug her nails into the palms of her hands and tried to steady herself. Eventually, the hopelessness faded away. You’ve come to grips with it, Brin. You’ve come to accept the inevitable. You’re home now. Time to find your inner peace and let God do as he may while you’re happy.

Feeling more resolute, she got back onto the main road and followed it out of town until she hit the loop. Shortly thereafter, she saw the rental
