This contribution owes its inspiration to Prof. Crispino Valenziano, and introduces an English-speaking readership to his comprehensive vision of architecture for liturgy, a vision which resonates the breadth of the Christian tradition and provides insights into the liturgical renewal of Vatican II. In his research on the ambo, Prof. Valenziano uncovered what lay hidden by accident of history, and from this beginning he has tightly synthesized a prolonged narration on the relationship between the Christian assembly celebrating liturgy and its icon: the church building.
The collaboration of Diana Klein, editor of the ‘Parish Practice’ page of The Tablet, working with Catherine Pepinster, editor of The Tablet, and also with the assistant editor James Roberts, was essential in the original publication of these now revised articles. Their insights and ability to address their readership enrich each of these articles. They are responsible for the headings and the sub-headings of each article along with the To Do action items. These contributions would not have come to fruition in this book without the backing of Ignatius Kusiak, publisher of The Tablet, whose personal encouragement of the authors is heartfelt and much appreciated.

The remote origins of this book lie in many a Sunday lunch at the family table of Nick and Millie Theis in Troy, Kansas. Millie became a second mother to Daniel McCarthy in the parish where he served as parish priest (pastor) from 1995 to 1999, after the passing of his mother Annette in 1988. Their daughter Margaret Stanton is experienced in parish ministry and assisted Daniel with her gift of helping to ease young priests into their ministerial role. After lunch they would remain at the dining-room table and sketch different arrangements for the church of St Charles Parish until they came upon one of such lasting value as has been proven true by subsequent studies and travel presented in this volume. That insight was the inspiration for rearranging the chapel at Mother of the Church Convent in the following story.
A warm welcome was extended by Sr Mary Thomas and the sisters of Mater Ecclesiae Congregation, near Rugby, Warwickshire, where we were allowed temporarily to rearrange the chapel to take some photographs that would illustrate certain principles. A few sisters helped, and they liked it so much that they requested a presentation that evening, and the community soon rearranged the seating in their chapel. We have continued our friendship and ongoing dialogue with this community of women who come later to their religious vocations.
A personal relationship is essential to offering input into the design process of a new church, and so we are grateful for such an invitation extended by Abbess Andrea Savage OSB, and the community of Stanbrook Abbey, who this weekend dedicated their new abbey church near Wass in North Yorkshire. They have erected the first ambo to be built in England since that of Westminster Cathedral a century ago. They have inlaid Minton tiles taken from their previous abbey to serve as an axis mundi, where the sisters will make their profession, share Communion and lie in vigil during funeral services; these rituals occur at the intersection of the liturgical and monastic axes of their chapel.
An invitation to a more prolonged conversation was extended by Sr Anne Shepard OSB, and the sisters of Mount St Scholastica Monastery, Atchison, Kansas, who welcomed Fr Daniel to give their annual community retreat in 2014. He used images of liturgical action, artistic narratives and architecture along with the prayers of the liturgy to consider the mysteries we celebrate. Their ongoing contribution also to the project Generative Communities is ever enriching, ever appreciated.
These three communities of religious women, by their conversation, decisiveness and action, have tested and brought to fruition the principles presented in this book; for their invitations to collaborate, the authors remain grateful.
James Leachman’s association with Lincoln Cathedral began in his early years when his father would accompany him to Holy Communion each Sunday. James came to know the place in a new way when we were given access to its architecture and liturgy by the Revd Gavin Kirk, former Precentor of Lincoln Cathedral and now Archdeacon of Lincoln, for whose friendship and support we are most grateful. We are equally grateful to the Revd Canon Christopher Tuckwell, Administrator of Westminster Cathedral, and appreciate his friendly welcome in discussion and access to the Cathedral of the Most Precious Blood for photography of, in particular, the magnificent ambo situated in the nave.
While writing these commentaries over the course of several years, Fr Daniel was a guest of Catholic Memorial High School, Waukesha, Wisconsin, and of its President, Fr Paul Hartmann, as well as a guest of St Aloysius Parish, West Allis, Wisconsin, and of their pastor Fr Jeffrey Prasser. Their generous hospitality continues to be much appreciated.
