Preface by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York
One of the most significant developments in the Church in recent years is the rediscovery that, for most people, becoming a Christian is like a journey, and that the local church can best help people make that journey by providing opportunity and resources for catechesis and discipleship.
Pilgrim is a course for the Christian journey. It encourages every church to think about developing a place where those who are not yet Christians can come and find out about the Christian faith, and experience Christian community. In this way Pilgrim enables people to encounter Christ and receive and engage with the teaching of the Church.
In the Early Church this process of evangelism and catechesis was called a catechumenate. The teaching of the Christian faith was based around the learning and receiving of key texts which summed up and communicated the heart of the Christian message, texts like the Apostles’ Creed, the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer and the Beatitudes.
Pilgrim aims to be a catechumenate for today’s Church of England. Like our forebears it bases its communication of the Christian faith around these basic texts. It also offers for the wider teaching of the Christian faith a slightly adapted version of A Revised Catechism.
Learning about the Christian faith means learning about God. This is not the sort of knowledge that can simply be extracted from a book. We can only know God by entering into that relationship with God that is made possible by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There is learning to be done, but it is primarily about a relationship. That is why, in Pilgrim, time is spent in fellowship, reflective Bible reading and prayer as much as discussion. In this way those who are exploring the Christian faith are formed as a little community of faith, learning and praying together as they seek the way of Christ. And the only qualification needed to be part of a Pilgrim group is to want to find out more.
It is hoped that this simple approach to sharing the Christian faith will be a real encouragement to churches who have not yet engaged in this sort of ministry, or who have found other resources less appropriate for their situation, or who are just looking for something new. It is an initiative of the House of Bishops, and it is written by bishops in the Church of England and other leading theologians, men and women, but it is offered to the whole Church of God in this land.
In Scripture and tradition the journey of faith is often referred to as a pilgrimage. A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place. The Pilgrim course is a journey to the heart of God and to a living, personal relationship with Jesus Christ within the household of his Church. It is offered to the parishes and communities of the Church of England that we might take more seriously the Great Commission to make disciples, and build in each of our parishes a place where people can come to know Christ and follow in the way of faith.

Welcome to Pilgrim
pilgrim.jpgAn Overview
Pilgrim is a course for the Christian journey. The aim of the course is to help people become disciples of Jesus Christ.
A pilgrim is a person on a journey. The Bible is a book full of journeys. God’s people are always travelling. God’s call to Abraham was to leave his own land for a great journey of faith. God’s call to Moses was to lead God’s people on a journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the promised land. Jesus took his
