    A note on using this Common Worship EPUB edition

    This Common Worship eBook is designed for use on any device able to read EPUB electronic books, such as an iPad using iBooks, or a Nook or Kobo eReader.

    The following notes on navigating this publication on an eBook Reader may be helpful, bearing in mind that using a prayer book is likely to be quite different to the experience of reading a novel or similar.

    Finding your way around easily

    ♦  The Contents list contains underlined links to each section of the book.

    ♦  You can access the Contents list from any section in the book by clicking on the underlined main heading.

    ♦  You can use the arrow keys to the left and right of the square select key to move forward or back a whole section at a time – e.g. from Authorization to Acknowledgements.

    ♦  Selecting the Menu will also give you the option you to search the text for a particular word or phrase.

    Personalizing your Common Worship eBook

    ♦  You can bookmark particular sections to mark a place to which you want to return (in much the same way as you might use a ribbon in a printed liturgical book). Go to Menu and select ‘Add Bookmark’.

    ♦  You can also add a note or highlight a particular section with a note, which may be helpful when planning worship or studying. Go to Menu and select ‘Add Note or Highlight’ (or ‘View Notes & Marks’ to retrieve notes you have made previously).

    Notes

    1 Normally on any occasion only one Collect is used.

    2 The Collect for each Sunday is used on the following weekdays, except where other provision is made.

    3 At Evening Prayer on Saturdays other than Easter Eve, Christmas Eve or Principal Feasts or Festivals, the Collect appointed for the ensuing Sunday shall be used. When Evening Prayer on the day before a Festival makes use of the lessons relating to that Festival, the Collect of that Festival shall be used.

    4 Where a Collect ends ‘Through Jesus Christ … now and for ever’, the minister may use the shorter ending, ‘Through Jesus Christ our Lord’, to which the people respond ‘Amen’, and omit the longer Trinitarian ending. The longer ending is to be preferred at Holy Communion.

    5 A number of Collects are designated **. In each season, the designated Collect may replace the Collect of the Day on other Sundays in that season. In Ordinary Time (the Sundays before Lent, the Sundays after Trinity and the Sundays before Advent) one of the designated Collects for Ordinary Time may replace the Collect of the Day.

    For Rules, see pages 525–534 of Common Worship: Services and Prayers for the Church of England.

    Advent

    Collect

    Almighty God,

    give us grace to cast away the works of darkness

    and to put on the armour of light,

    now in the time of this mortal life,

    in which your Son Jesus Christ came to us in great humility;

    that on the last day,

    when he shall come again in his glorious majesty

    to judge the living and the dead,

    we may rise to the life immortal;

    through him who is alive and reigns with you,

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever.

    This Collect may be used as the Post Communion on any day from the Second Sunday of Advent until Christmas Eve instead of the Post Communion provided.

    (or)

    Almighty God,

    as your kingdom dawns,

    turn us from the darkness of sin to the

    light of holiness,

    that we may be ready to meet you

    in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

    Post Communion

    O Lord our God,

    make us watchful and keep us faithful

    as we await the coming of your Son our Lord;

    that, when he shall appear,

    he may not find us sleeping in sin

    but active in his service

    and joyful in his praise;

    through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Collect

    O Lord, raise up, we pray, your power

    and come among us,

    and with great might succour us;

    that whereas, through our sins and wickedness

    we are grievously hindered

    in running the race that is set before us,

    your bountiful grace and mercy

    may speedily help and deliver us;

    through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

    to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

    be honour and glory, now and for ever.

    (or)

    Almighty God,

    purify our hearts and minds,

    that when your Son Jesus Christ comes again as

    judge and saviour

    we may be ready to receive him,

    who is our Lord and our God.

    Post Communion

    Father in heaven,

    who sent your Son to redeem the world

    and will send him again to be our judge:

    give us grace so to imitate him

    in the humility and purity of his first coming

    that, when he comes again,

    we may be ready to greet him

    with joyful love and firm faith;

    through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Collect

    O Lord Jesus Christ,

    who at your first coming sent your messenger

    to prepare your way before you:

    grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries

    may likewise so prepare and make ready your way

    by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just,

    that at your second coming to judge the world

    we may be found an acceptable people in your sight;

    for you are alive and reign with the Father

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever.

    (or)

    God for whom we watch and wait,

    you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son:

    give us courage to speak the truth,

    to hunger for justice,

    and to suffer for the cause of right,

    with Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Post Communion

    We give you thanks, O Lord, for these heavenly gifts;

    kindle in us the fire of your Spirit

    that when your Christ comes again

    we may shine as lights before his face;

    who is alive and reigns now and for ever.

    This provision is not used on weekdays after 23 December.

    Collect

    God our redeemer,

    who prepared the Blessed Virgin Mary

    to be the mother of your Son:

    grant that, as she looked for his coming as our saviour,

    so we may be ready to greet him

    when he comes again as our judge;

    who is alive and reigns with you,

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever.

    (or) **

    Eternal God,

    as Mary waited for the birth of your Son,

    so we wait for his coming in glory;

    bring us through the birth pangs of this present age

    to see, with her, our great salvation

    in Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Post Communion

    Heavenly Father,

    who chose the Blessed Virgin Mary

    to be the mother of the promised saviour:

    fill us your servants with your grace,

    that in all things we may embrace your holy will

    and with her rejoice in your salvation;

    through Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Collect

    Almighty God,

    you make us glad with the yearly remembrance

    of the birth of your Son Jesus Christ:

    grant that, as we joyfully receive him as our redeemer,

    so we may with sure confidence behold him

    when he shall come to be our judge;

    who is alive and reigns with you,

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever.

    (or)

    Almighty God,

    as we prepare with joy

    to celebrate the gift of the Christ-child,

    embrace the earth with your glory

    and be for us a living hope

    in Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Post Communion

    Eternal God, for whom we wait,

    you have fed us with the bread of eternal life:

    keep us ever watchful,

    that we may be ready to stand before the Son of man,

    Jesus Christ our Lord.

    Christmas

    Collect

    Eternal God,

    who made this most holy night

    to shine with the brightness of your one true light:

    bring us, who have known the revelation of that light on earth,

    to see the radiance of your heavenly glory;

    through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

    who is alive and reigns with you,

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever.

    (or)

    Eternal God,

    in the stillness of this night

    you sent your almighty Word

    to pierce the world’s darkness with the light of salvation:

    give to the earth the peace that we long for

    and fill our hearts with the joy of heaven

    through our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

    Post Communion

    God our Father,

    in this night you have made known to us again

    the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:

    confirm our faith and fix our eyes on him

    until the day dawns

    and Christ the Morning Star rises in our hearts.

    To him be glory both now and for ever.

    Collect

    Almighty God,

    you have given us your only-begotten Son

    to take our nature upon him

    and as at this time to be born of a pure virgin:

    grant that we, who have been born again

    and made your children by adoption and grace,

    may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit;

    through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

    who is alive and reigns with you,

    in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

    one God, now and for ever.

    (or) **

    Lord Jesus Christ,

    your birth at Bethlehem

    draws us to kneel in
