    About Elaine Orr

CHAPTER ONE: TAKING CARE OF HUMANS

MILDRED MISTLETOE WAS NOT an ordinary cat. Her coal black coat had speckles of white, and she preferred napping with the house mouse to chasing him. Though not fond of the dog, she tolerated him.

Being born on Christmas Day was not unusual. But as far as she knew, Mildred Mistletoe was the only cat born under the Christmas tree, actually in the manger.

Her Mama Cat had pawed the Baby Jesus and family out of the manger, but permitted the sheep and donkey to stay. What Mama Cat, a local stray that had been brought indoors during a snowstorm, did not do after Mildred Mistletoe’s birth was stick around to care for her.

Her humans, twins Fergie and Frankie O’Hara, had done a passable job. Frankie had some trouble with the tiny bottle of kitten milk, but he got better after a bunch dripped on his basketball shoes.

Mildred Mistletoe would turn five this year. Fergie and Frank, who no longer permitted his mother to call him Frankie, attended high school. And they seemed to have a problem.

Mildred needed to solve it. If the worried looks and yelling continued, Mildred’s birthday, always an occasion for family presents and good food, would be ruined.

Fergie sat staring at the corner of the living room that held the Christmas tree, but when Frank came in from walking Dog, she wailed, It isn’t true! Why would those girls tell people I took money from the Christmas dinner collection?

Mildred knew all about the dinner. Each year, Fergie, Frank, and their parents cooked mounds of mashed potatoes and baked hundreds of cookies. They took these to their Illinois town’s community center Christmas Eve.

Purchased turkeys and hams were added to the donated goodies, and Fergie and Frank helped collect coins for the meat. They started at Halloween, a useless holiday that yielded no good treats, worked through Thanksgiving, which earned Mildred many good snacks, and finished a few days
