    What are the Adrenal Glands?

    While the adrenal glands are small – only about three inches long and about 1.5 inches high – they are essential to healthy body functions. The most well-known job of these small glands is to produce the hormone adrenaline. This is why they are most often talked about in terms of stress. Adrenal glands are triangle shaped, and are found atop each of your kidneys.

    The adrenal glands consist of two parts, each of which has a distinct and important role in your body. These two parts are the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla. The adrenal cortex produces vital life hormones such as cortisol and aldosterone. Cortisol helps the body convert carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy. It also helps regulate blood pressure, which is necessary for a healthy cardiovascular system. The importance of cortisol in a healthy metabolism explains why adrenal fatigue can often lead to weight gain. The adrenal cortex also produces corticosterone, which works with cortisol to maintain a healthy immune system and suppress inflammatory reactions in your body. Aldosterone helps to regulate the salt and water ratios in your body, thereby maintaining healthy blood pressure. The adrenal cortex also releases small amounts of sex hormones (testosterone for men, and estrogen for women). The adrenal medulla – produces two different hormones, the best known of which is adrenaline. When your body senses stress, whether it is emotional or physical, and your nervous system reacts by producing adrenaline. Adrenaline (also called epinephrine) helps your body cope with stress by sending more blood to the brain and muscles, and increasing your blood sugar levels. When you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, your body cannot adequately deal with stress. The second hormone produced by the adrenal medulla is noradrenaline, which also aids in stress reactions.

    If you have low cortisol levels, you may become fatigued, because your body is not converting your food into energy the way it should be. You may also experience poor immune function, hypoglycemia, and low blood pressure due
