About this ebook
This book is a collection of seven stories based on the history of 26 letters of the English alphabet. The appearance of the letters of the English alphabet has evolved over the centuries, as they travelled across many countries.
The Roman alphabet was copied from the Etruscan alphabet, which in turn, was copied from the Greek alphabet. The letters of the English alphabet came from the Roman alphabet, which only had 23 letters. The remaining three letters W, V and W were only added later. W was the 24th letter to join the English alphabet, before V and J. The last letter to be added to the English alphabet was J. The letters V and W were considered to be U's daughters. There was a failed attempt to remove Z from the English language. When the letter C was added to the English language, G was banished for many centuries from the English language, only to be added again.

Alphabet Stories - Revathi Murthy
1. THE REVOLT OF THE ALPHABETS
The 26 letters of the alphabet lived in a house on Alphabet Hill. The Wordpool was a place where the letters met every day, and practiced making words. New words from Latin, Greek, French, Hindi, and other languages were constantly being added to English. People were also inventing and discovering new things, and coining new words.
One morning, the Wordsmith, a maker of words, arrived at the Wordpool. His arrival always made the letters of the alphabet happy, as he taught them new words. But on this particular day, the Wordsmith’s smile was missing, and the letters knew they were in trouble.
Why do you look sad?
B asked.
One of the letters will have to leave Alphabet Hill today,
said the Wordsmith.
Who is going to leave?
asked A.
Z,
said the Wordsmith.
Why me?
asked Z anxiously.
The Wordsmith had no answer. He took his orders from the rulees, a group of people who were well versed in the English language, and made all the rules about the use of the alphabet.
Even though Z was sometimes mean, the rest of the letters liked him. Let’s go and talk to the rulees. I am sure they will let Z stay on at Alphabet Hill,
said A.
All the letters agreed, and marched to the
