About this ebook

It’s a closely-knit community. An elderly woman has been mugged and is unconscious, but no one claims to have seen the mugging except for two teens. The accused is an innocent young boy hanging out with friends, but his accusers have done their “homework,” putting him firmly in the picture.

Highlighting the challenges of single parenting and of growing up in an area rife with crime. This book pulls you into the very heart of a family’s struggle for survival, ending, however, with single mum, Dorothy, eventually finding love and settling down, but not before the eldest of her three sons had been falsely accused of manslaughter and sent to jail.

A Crime of Innocence - MoBoni Lewis

    Prologue

They set me up, Roger screams, throwing his football boots against the front door.

Dorothy stares at the pair of diamond-encrusted soles in the hallway, tears filling her eyes. They were the only pair Roger owned, a Christmas present from three of his friends, two of whom she’s never met.

Against all sound judgement, Dorothy had allowed Roger to keep the boots. Money was tight, and she hadn’t been able to buy him a Christmas gift.

Three months after being given the boots, however, Roger Dye is being charged with manslaughter, with two of his friends as witnesses to the crime-the same ones who had gotten him the boots.

    Chapter 1

    16 years earlier

It’s the first day of the new school year. The girls wait in line for their yearly blood test just outside the school hall.

Dorothy Haines, the school nurse calls loudly, her tiny frame poised on a bench inside the makeshift health centre.

Dorothy begins inching slowly towards the other girls, her eyes laced with fear.

Your turn Dorothy, Charlotte Price growls, pushing the petrified Dorothy towards the school nurse, Alice Tenny.

Dorothy staggers towards Alice. I don’t do needles, Miss, she says, trembling.

Oh yes, you do, Alice Tenny replies. It’s your fifth year in this school. Chop, chop!

With that, Dorothy Haines is pulled inside the tent, kicking and screaming, much to the amusement of the other girls.

The following day, the girls gather in the dining hall for their blood test results.

And one of you has been flouting the school rules, the head teacher snarls, pacing the room. Her name was Gayle Day.

The girls look around anxiously, wondering which one of them had been found guilty. And that girl will not be returning to the school tomorrow, Gayle continues, stamping her feet for emphasis.

Suddenly, one of the girls present, Jennifer Bray, begins shuffling uncomfortably. I need to go, Miss, she says, squirming.

    Not now, Jennifer, Gayle replies.

Please, Miss, the young girl pleads. I really need to.

Gayle turns around to see Jennifer in tears. Okay, make it quick. She pauses. I’ll be waiting.

Jennifer Bray returns quickly and almost immediately Gayle Day resumes her address. Yes, as I was saying, one of you has been found guilty of unacceptable behaviour, and that student will not be returning to the school tomorrow. Dorothy Haines; step aside, please.

    The other girls gasped.

Dorothy Haines has now ceased to be a student of this institution, Gayle informs the girls. She’ll be leaving school this afternoon. The rest of you can now return to your classes.

Dorothy steps aside and begins to sob.

You know why you’ve been asked to stay behind, don’t you? Gayle asks Dorothy. Dorothy nods.

You’re one of my best pupils, Gayle tells her, but rules are rules. I’m afraid I’m going to have to let you go. You have until the end of the last lesson to pack your things.

Gayle places a letter of expulsion in Dorothy Haines’s hands.

What about my exams, Miss? Dorothy asks, her lips trembling.

I’ll have to have a word with your parents about that, Gayle replies, adjusting her glasses, but you won’t be sitting for your papers in this school that much I can tell you."

Dorothy slumps on the floor in a flood of tears. Please, Miss, She pleads. I promise I’ll be no trouble. Just let me come in for my exams.

I’m sorry Dorothy, but the decision has been made. And with that Gayle Day leaves the hall.

Dorothy crouches in the corner of the dining hall whimpering like a child. She can’t believe she’s been expelled from school a few weeks before her final exams. If only she’d been more careful, she tells herself. Just then the younger students start to converge at the dining hall. It’s the last lesson, and school will soon be over.
