About this ebook

True religion confronts earth with heaven and brings eternity to bear upon time. The messenger of Christ, though he speaks from God, must also, as the Quakers used to say, “speak to the condition” of his hearers; otherwise he will speak a language known only to himself. His message must be not only timeless but timely. He must speak to his own generation.

The message of this book does not grow out of these times but it is appropriate to them. It is called forth by a condition which has existed in the Church for some years and is steadily growing worse. I refer to the loss of the concept of majesty from the popular religious mind. The Church has surrendered her once lofty concept of God and has substituted for it one so low, so ignoble, as to be utterly unworthy of thinking, worshipping men. This she has done not deliberately, but little by little and without her knowledge; and her very unawareness only makes her situation all the more tragic.

Re-read of this classic in October of 2009 reminds me of just how far I have to go and also how far I've come in my daily walk. This book is thin and super deep.

Tozer calls all who read this book to worship. Although one could call this book a theology book it truly is a worship book as well. We read this for a theology class and it deserves to be recognized as a true work of art.

This is an excellent book which considers many attributes of God each separately while recognizing throughout that they are all connected (or more properly, one unified being, which is God Himself. Tozer would say that you cannot say God's attributes are interconnected, because you cannot properly even tease them apart.) He also emphasizes the need to grow in a knowledge of God even though He is unknowable. The book would be all but perfect if it were not for the last two chapters. Throughout the whole book Tozer emphasizes the need to not leave out any one attribute in a finite attempt to explain another, but then in the second to last chapter he tries to explain God's sovereignty and how that interacts with human will in such a way as to limit God's omniscience. He would have been better off explaining sovereignty biblically and leaving the rest up to the reader. The last chapter then gives the "requirements" for knowing God, which I believe to be overly cumbersome and complicated, and somewhat unbiblical. However, as a whole, the book is an excellent treatise on the attributes of God, and rather accessible and readable at that.

A powerful and profound work of devotional theology, considering the attributes of God. Tozer argues fervently for the need to see God as He is, and to respond accordingly. He decries the tendency to consider God as being answerable to people, rather than vice versa, and does a very good job of showing something of God's majesty and pre-eminence, all the while reminding us that we can never fully know or comprehend Him.I found the chapters on the self-existence, immutability, justice, love and holiness of God particularly inspiring and thought-provoking, and this is a book that I will return to and meditate upon time and again.

One of the best books I have read all year. Refreshing. A much needed call to the necessity of a right understanding of God. To many books today try to make us feel good and get us to think alot yet never get us to that gut-wrenching, heart-palpatating, jaw-dropping, bring us to our knees reverence for the majesty of our Almighty God.
