MARSHALL DRUMMOND COULD PUSH THE MODEL A only so fast before he risked the old Ford burning up on him. Driving from Winston-Salem to Greensboro always required a solid two hours, but this time, the minutes seemed to drag and taunt him simultaneously. With the sun setting and the headlights barely good enough to meet the road, he worried he might be forced to slow down even more.

Lighting a cigarette, he readjusted on the seat. Go over it again, he said to the woman sitting next to him. We won’t reach your farm for a bit, and the more I know what to expect, the better.

He meant what he said; however, he withheld the fact that the more times a story was told, the more details he could glean from it. The bracelet around her bony wrist jangled as it slid toward her elbow. Most of her bones pressed against her skin. The economic depression had lasted for so many years now that many people had wasted away to almost nothing.

But that wasn’t the reason for her malnourished look, and he knew it. After all, the McCullen tobacco farm had done well enough for several years — especially with the rising war in Europe. People
