12 Tips to Prepare for the Unexpected on your Path - Jeff Davidson

12 Tips to Prepare for the Unexpected on Your Path to Innovation

    By Jeff Davidson

While I'm channel-surfing in front of the TV, I come across the film Steel Magnolias. Not my usual fare, but nothing better is on, and Julia Roberts’ role is intriguing. She's a diabetic who’s had a surge of insulin and, to balance the charge, she needs something sweet, like a piece of candy or a glass of orange juice.

While I’m watching, I recall something I witnessed at a convention years back. A man seated in the audience slumps over in his chair and falls on the floor. The speaker stops the presentation, the house lights go up, and everything comes to a halt. Everyone is buzzing – what happened to him, is he dead? Is he comatose? Where are the medics?

After several agonizing minutes, someone comes darting into the room with a glass of orange juice. They rush over to the man, who has now showed signs of movement and is being comforted by some fellow audience members. They give him the glass of orange juice. He drinks it, and in a matter of seconds, he’s restored. Those unfamiliar with the sequence, as I was in those days, didn't realize that a simple glass of orange juice is one of many antidotes to this baffling, pervasive ailment.

    Forethought or Afterlife?

As I continue to watch Julia Roberts and reflect back to the man slumped over at the convention, I think to myself, What would it have taken for him to keep a juice box in his briefcase, or a Capri Sun packet in his pants pocket? How difficult would it be for him to carry a roll of LifeSavers, or any other quick snack to ward off a horrendous health challenge? What kind of guy would put himself through that? He must be a doozie of a bowling partner.

Who on this planet would attend a convention, seat himself among 2,000 people, and not have on his person a simple fix for what he knows to be a distinctive threat to his health and well-being? If I knew I was at risk for slumping over in the middle of events, not once would I be caught without the requisite glucose to put myself back on an even keel.
