First of all, I think it should be clarified that this is not a "how-to-draw" book for beginners. This is a book about rendering drawings (using shading and texture to give form), by utilizing pens. If you are a beginner artist, this is not the book for you. It also does not have tons of super detailed step-by-step demonstrations. Instead, this is more of a compendium of pen rendering techniques that you can use to get inspiration and try things for yourself with your own compositions. That being said, Claudia really focuses on using technical pens. If you do not want to buy technical pens, you can get the same effect with something like a set of the Sakura Pigma Micron fineliners. The fineliners are more affordable and don't come with any problems like skipping or getting clogged--however, they cannot be refilled and they come in limited colors. Claudia also covers some information about ink washes, though this is not given in any detail. I think it's a fantastic book for getting comfortable with a pen, after you've already learned the basics of drawing with another medium such as pencil. Pen can seem daunting because there is no way to erase! But Claudia makes it seem very fun and worth practicing to pick up the skill. The only reason I gave the book 4 out of 5, is that like her other books, I don't think this is a good digital book. The tutorials and diagrams are typically accompanied by captions that are written in this very thin and scrolling font. It's nearly impossible to read, and Scribd desktop does not have a zoom function. However, I only look at art books on here for the purpose of seeing if I want to buy a physical copy. And I will definitely be getting a physical copy of this book! I consider this a must-have for anyone who wants to get into pen-and-ink drawing--sketchers, natura journalers, art journalers, and even fine artists.
