About this ebook

When 12-year-old Cathleen’s parents face ruin and starvation during a bleak famine, they understand that they can no longer afford to feed all their children.
So, when the king sends out invitations, asking for young girls of the land to go to his court to be trained as ladies-in-waiting for the queen, it seems like the perfect opportunity. She would be well looked after, while her family would have one less mouth to feed.
At first unhappy about her situation, Cathleen vows to make the most of the opportunity and quickly learns the ways of the court, impressing the queen and drawing the admiring glances of her son, the 16-year-old Prince Roberts.
As the years' pass, the prince and the lady-in-waiting become friends and a deep bond grows between them, eventually developing into love. But the queen has other ideas and is determined that Cathleen will never marry her son, preparing the way for him to marry another princess instead.
But prince Roberts is determined that he and Cathleen will be together. Can love find a way? Can he find the strength to oppose the queen and give Cathleen the life she deserves?

The clouds were sealed and rains stopped falling. A strong famine stretched over the land and many families faced extreme hardship in Wethersfield. Cathleen’s parents, with six children to feed, had a very hard time feeding. They tried to cope the best they could, selling off their extra cattle, and a few other disposables. The times were really hard. They even took in boarders that would pay with money or work for their meals and bed space. Cathleen was a young 12-year-old girl and had little idea about the things that were happening, but her young mind could tell that things were not like they once used to be. Her ration of meals had reduced and came less frequently. Her Mum also always told her to drink water whenever she asked for more food.

One day, her parents called her aside to talk to her. They explained the famine to her and told her the implications. The famine was getting worse, and their supplies and means of subsistence were well depleted. Not even the guests who came to pay for bed space were able to help them feed their 6 children. Cathleen was the second child and first daughter. She was brighter than
