    New Edinburgh Space Station, Seventh Day Fourth Month, 3000 A.E.

    Shanti arrived at the observation room early the next morning. It had five oversized, comfortable chairs facing a screen that took up the entire wall. To the right stood a buffet, empty for the moment, but holding the promise of being laden with treats by the time the gentlemen arrived. There was a table to the left as well, with a remote control and some other equipment on it. Each chair had a buzzer on the side, to summon a maid, if needed.

    She finished her turn about the room and approved. She went to the bell, but before she did, Mrs. Banks arrived.

    You’re excellent, Shanti said, beaming at her housekeeper.

    Mrs. Banks gave her a rare smile. I’ve been doing this for nearly thirty years. The housekeeper looked around the room. How does this meet with your expectations?

    It is quite suitable for its purpose, she said, sitting down, and these chairs are uncommonly comfortable.

    Good, Mrs. Banks said, with a curt nod. The cook has prepared jelly donuts, cinnamon rolls, and egg sandwiches.

    With sausage and cheese? Shanti said, looking up from her tablet.

    Both.

    It sounds extravagant.

    Perhaps for students. But when entertaining important guests, we serve the best, because they expect it. Mrs. Banks brushed her skirts.

    I see, Shanti said, nodding. Thank you for your guidance on these matters.
