The Collettes Saga 'Willa" - Dahlia Rose

    The Collettes: Willa

    By Dahlia Rose

    Prologue... France 1708

Will you quiet those mewling children? Jarrod snarled.

The sounds of their cries filled the old-style cottage he was forced to live in. It had been a year since the death of the girls’ parents and he was on the run with three girls born of death and blood. They were in Germany now living in a small coastline village where none would suspect that vampires lived in their midst. For a year now the Collette sisters were fed with fresh blood in baby bottles and even as babies their thirst was unquenchable at points.

Jarrod would have found it amusing except for the fact that they were exiled and in hiding from others who wanted the prize just as badly as he did—the Lazarus amulet. For that alone, he tolerated the cries and the countless hours of listening to the sisters play and drool all over his clothes. He was their father and their mother now and their gratitude would bring him the ultimate reward. No one knew who he was, they all counted him as David Collette’s trusted friend. How would they know that he planned all this from the very beginning? He was more powerful than they all thought but he would be patient and keep his secrets. It was better to be like the chameleon, for however long it took. By the time any knew the truth, it would be too late and he would be the ruler that brought darkness to the world.

A loud squeal, a crash and then a wail of pain filled his ears once more and broke his thoughts. He covered his ears with his hands, trying to gather the patience not to snap each of their necks. With a long weary sigh, he got up and pulled his cloak around him tighter, walking up the stairs of the stone cottage. They needed somewhere better to live this kind of life as not meant for him of royal blood.

What is the problem with the children this time? he asked the nanny who was busy trying to soothe one of the three girls. He could not tell them apart as yet, all three looked like identical fat cherub babies.

Sire, Luna’s fangs have come in and she has been using them to chew on her sisters, the French nanny replied. She stretched out a crying Willa’s arm and Jarrod could see the tiny puncture marks where she was bitten more than once.

Jarrod had picked a human nanny for the children. She knew and served vampires and willingly gave them her fresh blood to help them survive like a mother giving their child breast milk.

His gaze went from Willa’s small arm to Luna who was sitting on the floor playing. Her childlike gaze met his and it was already defiant for such a young age. When she smiled, her small fangs came down from her gums. Sola, the firstborn, sat next to her sister and she too looked at Jarrod. Her eyes always made him uncomfortable, so ageless and knowing in a small child, it was as if she knew the secrets of the world already.

The wails of Willa were now down to a few sobs and a sniffle here and there. He crouched low to Luna who reached out and he picked her up.

Ma petite, you mustn’t use your sister for food, he murmured.

The child looked up at him and reached out her chubby fingers to caress his cheek. Her small hands were cool; a child born of death, her hands would never be warm. He could see love in her eyes and he put her down and kissed her cheek. He did the same to Sola and Willa, giving them each a kiss before he left the room. They were the closest thing he had to children and now he was their father. For the life he had given them they would be grateful and they would gladly give him the amulet that would let him walk in the sunlight. He could grow to have some affection for them, he might even let them rule by his side when he brought hell to the world.

For now, he would play the role of doting father to children that were not his. It would bring him the greatest treasure that any one vampire could hold other than immortality. They would know him as Jarrod, their mentor and the only person who ever loved them and protected them. The world would know him by his true name and would fear his wrath. He was Carthos, the last true ancient vampire.

    Chapter One

The voices sounded distant and muffled. Willa tried with all her concentration to bring them closer in her mind. As soon as she fought through the haze back to the conscious world, intense pain hit her. She bit her lip to keep from crying out. Instead, she tried to focus on the conversation going on around her.

Motherfucker! Gideon snarled as he drove like a demon. We should’ve known, goddammit. I knew something felt off. Jarrod is Carthos.

How can he be? He raised us... After three hundred years, how could we not have known? Sola’s voice broke with unshed tears.

He...betrayed us... I could not...sense him... Willa’s voice was weak as she lay across Luna’s lap in the back seat of the black SUV.

Willa! Honey, how do you feel? Luna asked.

Like I was stabbed. She tried to not think about the burning fire going through her veins.

It was all they could do was to pile in to the truck and head for the city. Willa could hardly stand as they had moved across the lawn. The one person they least expected compromised the mansion and Willa was badly hurt. Not only did he stab her but the blade was treated and now the effects of garlic and holy water flowed through her veins. Sola sat up front with Gideon and Luna held her hand over Willa’s gaping wound. She could see the fear and hurt in her sisters’ eyes. While George, who sat in the middle row not saying much, had a look of pure anger blazing from her eyes. They were all stunned by what had happened.

So this was his plan all along, to raise us, to keep us alive so we could find the amulet for him? Luna swore viciously. Angry tears rolled down her cheeks.

We couldn’t have known...we couldn’t... Willa’s words broke off as a wave of excruciating pain went through her body. This time she could not help but to cry out in agony.

Damn, she needs fresh blood and fast! Luna said harshly.

I’m going as fast as I can! Gideon replied grimly.

Their voices began to fade again; Willa could feel the mist claiming her once more.

Willa, stay awake! Come on, baby, stay awake!

Luna’s voice called out to her from the mist but she could not fight her way back. Someone else was calling to her and she had to go to the strong voice pulling her away.

    * * * *

Willa. The voice called to her from between the mist, and as she walked slowly she could see no one.

Where are you? she called out. Her eyes peered through the fog as her name was whispered again like the wind caressing her cheeks.

    I’m here, my love.

My love? Willa questioned. How can you call me that?

Because I have dreamed about you for months now. A figure approached her out of the mist that swirled around them. You are Willa Collette, third daughter of vampire blood and I am your mate.

She looked at the man that stood before her. He was almost a head taller than her, his hair was long and the color of a golden wheat. It hung down onto the brown leather coat that covered his shoulders. His face was angular and behind thin-rimmed glasses were eyes that were beyond ice blue to the point that they were almost opaque.

How do you know of me, of my family? she whispered.

I just do, and for your part of this quest you must come to me, Willa. We must do this alone without your sisters. To keep them safe, we must find your part of the amulet alone. It is only when we have the final piece that we must all stand together to face Carthos. He has hidden in plain view all this time; his home is in the catacombs underneath the mansion. He had them built centuries ago while you were children.

Oh, my God! All these years! I can’t leave them. We...we have been betrayed by the one we trusted the most. Together we are stronger. I can’t leave them to fight Jarrod...I mean, Carthos alone.

They will be safe; you have to be strong for all of them now. Their spirits are low, you have to be their strength.

Where will I find you? Even as she asked the question Willa knew in her heart she could trust him. Her gift may have failed her when
