About this ebook

Missionary Francis Newberry was a loving mother, a devoted wife, and a faithful servant of the Lord--those qualities shifted when her life was threatened by her abusive husband.
A heated argument created a ghastly scene that sent Francis to jail for the crime of a double homicide--husband and the neighbor. Frozen in unprecedented horror, she turns to the one man known as Esquire.

    DAVE AND BURG LAW FIRM

VOICES BOOMED FROM within a room marked 6-Business Only. Twenty minutes later the door opened to four men, dressed in dark suits, walking with their heads down. As soon as they disappeared into the elevator, a dark-haired woman, carrying a briefcase, turned the corner and entered the room.

She stepped onto a triangular symbol in the center of the room and waited until one of the partners acknowledged her. A line connected to each point of the triangle and led to one of the partner’s table.

Directly in front of her sat Jack Barnes, the project developer and organizer at the firm. His arms were short like a penguin, but hairy as a grizzly bear. He had a round pudgy face with deep dimples.

Steve Williams, the CMO at the firm sat to the left. He was tall and slender. He wore top hats with long bibs, hiding his dark eyes like a detective.

Tom Credon, the lead prosecutor and District Attorney, sat to the right. He had a square face with thick arms accompanying his large hands. He kept his silky black hair pulled back in a ponytail.

Jack motioned her toward him. She placed the briefcase down on the table and took a few steps backwards.

Thank you, Cindy, he said. Contact me when my guests arrive.

She nodded and left the room.

Jack opened the case and held up a 9mm and grinned. Here is another piece of my brilliant plan. If everything goes as planned, Mr. Everson will be arrested for a terrible crime.

What’s so special about a 9mm? Tom asked. Please tell me you’re not giving Mr. Everson a gift. Surely the brain cells in your large cranium can remember our experiences with Mr. Everson last time. He made us look like fools during the Ganvis’ trial. We had that preacher locked away for sure, and then here comes Mr. Everson to the rescue. He waved his hand. So spare me with this stupid plan of yours.

Jack smiled. Insults are not needed. Actually I’m sending him a few gifts—a custom 9mm, two Cuban cigars, and a gold pocketknife. He returned the gun to the case. I’ve also had Mr. Everson’s name engraved on the barrel.

Steve frowned. What’s the point of all of this?

Be patient and I’ll explain, Jack said. I’ve had my eye on a few other pawns—Detective Jason Smith and Missionary Francis Newberry. He smiled and touched the case. This gun will have Mr. Everson’s fingerprints on it.

Steve laughed. And you expect us to believe this?

You’re talking in circles, Tom said. This foolishness is really making you look bad.

Give me a few minutes, Jack said. Everything will make sense once my guests arrive.

    The intercom buzzed.

    Sir, your guests have arrived.

Great. Cindy, please bring them to the office.

I hope you’re not wasting our time, Steve said.

Exactly, Tom said. We have other business to attend to.

We wasted a lot of money, Steve said. Sheriff Rudolph, Deacon Bradley, and Tina Crenshaw were useless pawns, who got what they deserved. Kidnapping Mr. Everson’s secretary and ruffing up his assistant didn’t help our plan at all. Nothing worked. Mr. Everson still came out victorious and this firm loss millions. He waved his hand and frowned. So excuse me if I’m not showing enthusiasm.

Jack smiled. You will once I tell you about my guests. PLAN A failed, but I can assure that PLAN B will succeed.

The door opened again to Cindy and two men. Everyone’s attention shot their way.

    Thank you, Cindy, Jack said.

She turned and left the room.

He extended his arm. Please have a seat gentlemen. He glanced over at his partners. I would like to introduce you to Frank Knuckles and Robert Tumbler. These two men have special jobs. He let out a chuckle. Oh and we will use Tina Crenshaw one last time. I have her on a short leash. Gentlemen, I promise we shall get our revenge on Mr. Everson. His litigation days will be over. I promise this plan is foolproof. He shrugged his shoulders. If someone gets hurt in the process, it’s fine with me.

Tom smiled at Steve. We’re listening.

    CHAPTER ONE

    WILSON COURTHOUSE

We, the Jury, find the defendant, Stephen Daniels, not guilty of the thief by taking.

Charles shook his client’s hand and sauntered out of the courtroom. On his way to the office, a beam of joy graced his face as one memory resurfaced—the smile of jubilee his wife displayed a few months ago when she found out she’s pregnant. Everything seemed to fall into a perfect place—married to a beautiful wife, a successful career and partnership at the law firm and soon to be a father.

His steps came to a halt when he entered his office. Doris, what is this on my desk? No gifts this year, remember?

It’s not from me, she said. It’s from Dave and Burg Law Firm. Do I need to call the bomb squad?

    Ha-ha. I hope not.

He walked over toward his desk and grabbed the note off the box.

    Greetings Mr. Everson,

We hope this gift finds you in good spirit. You were an admirable opponent.
