      CHAPTER ONE

      START WHERE YOU ARE

      IN DEVELOPING THE MONEY mindset, don’t worry about those who start with riches.  Start where you are and make your own.  Then you are more likely to retain what you have earned.

      Having the money mindset is one thing.  Having the product or service with which to make the money is another.

      So here we go: start by focusing on products or services that are needed.  Review your own situation.  Have you ever found a need for a particular product or service and wondered why it does not exist?  Do you know what this is?  Opportunity!  The reward goes to the person - whether man, woman or child - who sees an opportunity, the chance to satisfy a need, and seizes it with both hands.

      If you can’t make a batch of the stuff, make a bottle.  If you can’t make a pound, make a penny’s worth.  But do something.  Start!

      Then, once you start, move fast, and market the heck out of the thing.  Race to get it established before a big business gets inkling of your idea and rushes to reap the rewards of your hard work.  There are tools at your fingertips like never before.  Social media is your friend.  Not much money to invest in advertising?  Don’t despair.  When launching something that’s new and different, forget advertising and instead focus on P.R. - both effective and cost-effective when compared with advertising.  Find your local news channels and quickly work your way up to the larger stations.

      Never limit your dreams for business, inventions or otherwise.  Believe in your ability to satisfy the opportunity you have identified, learn as much as you can, but don’t delay too long.  Learn enough to get started, then start!  Of course, you want a good product, but aim for excellence, not perfection.  The perfectionist will still be busy trying to perfect things while others run past and start making money off the same idea or business plan.

      I know so many writer colleagues with superior writing skills who never finish the first novel or work of nonfiction, editing and re-editing, tightening up and tweaking while others, less proficient, have books on sale, making them comfortable incomes.  I repeat: aim for excellence, not perfection.

      But how can I do that, you might ask?  How can I be excellent at something when I don’t even know what I could be doing, or making, or selling?  Never
