About this ebook

Rafe is experimenting in a technology humans have considered taboo for centuries: Artificial intelligence. With it, he has learned to create entire mindscapes which a human can upload into, completely immersive and completely real.

But some don't want Rafe to succeed. Some want him to weaponize his discovery. Some want to steal it as a terror weapon against the Compact.

And Rafe just wants to impress a beautiful girl.

The pain began squeezing at Rafe’s temples as he stared at the pad for what seemed like the tenth straight hour. Actually, he had been in the coffee shop only an hour and a half before fatigue overtook him. He was tempted to get another coffee, his fifth of the evening, but then he would never fall asleep that night. Tomorrow, he had to defend his thesis.

At the same time, this anomaly in the virtual world he had created would gnaw at him until he figured out the root cause. Finally, realizing he would just spin his wheels from here out, he killed his session on the lab network. Being a genius is too much like work.

    Humble, aren’t we?

Rafe looked up and saw the most beautiful woman he’d ever met in his life. Five and a half feet tall with green eyes, light mocha skin, and a cascade of dark brown curls spilling across her shoulders, she regarded him with a look of amusement.

Yes, said Rafe. We are. If I was a genius, I wouldn’t be sitting in a coffee shop working myself into a headache. I’d be on another planet in a cushy office with my own staff. He stood and offered his hand. I’m Rafe, by the way.

Serene, she said. I take it you’re a cybernetics major?

    Post-grad. How’d you guess?

She smiled, looking down and away, then back up. Have you looked in a mirror lately?

That gave Rafe a much needed laugh. I haven’t had time.

    And it shows.

Rafe studied his new companion. She did not recoil from him, far from it, but she dressed... What was the word he was looking for? Bohemian? How about you? I don’t think I’ve seen you around campus before.

She made an almost musical sound
