About this ebook

Imagine.

Love, life, lies.

Playing the game of imagining is a dangerous one. It can leave you paralyzed by all the possibilities. Not knowing what could be because you are scared to dream.

When my life finally all came together, I thought I’d imagined every outcome.

I dreamed of the ocean. The waves. But most of all the shore. Covered in sand or snow. It haunted me every night but in the most wonderful of ways. Until that night.

It was absolutely heartbreaking.

Sinking below. Deeper and deeper until you hit the ocean floor. Never to touch the shore again.

Sometimes taking a risk is the only way to break the surface. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to end well.

You can’t even imagine.

Trust me, I should know.

    Imagine I said yes...

    ––––––––

Standing outside my dorm room waiting, I can feel the shiver of fear but the tingling of anticipation too. When Reed called me out of the blue asking if I needed a ride to Galveston, Texas, for his dad’s 50th party cruise I was shocked. Not because he and I don’t talk, but because we don’t attend the same University. I’m a first year at the University of Texas in Austin, and he is in his final year in Houston. I’m completely out of the way and he would have to backtrack a couple hours to get me. He doesn’t seem to care though. I told him I’d be fine to drive myself and when he wasn’t okay with that almost four-hour drive alone, I tried saying I could take the bus. That didn’t fly either. So now he is on his way here. Instead of the hour drive for him it would have taken, it will be a seven hour round trip for him.

Reed and I have known each other since I was six when I moved to Michigan with my family. Starting at a new school with an Alabama accent was something that people loved to tease me about. The older I got, the less distinguished my accent was. I now just sound like the rest of them. His sister Danni and I became fast friends, which meant he tormented me every chance he got for a long time. He was three years older than us but he still had gone out of his way to trip me and throw snowballs at me. Which was something I wasn’t prepared for being from Alabama.

When I got to high school, I had hoped he’d finally open his eyes and see me. I was a freshman and he was a senior, so apparently that meant that we were from different worlds. We’d always be from different worlds. The only saving grace was his cousin Derek. When Reed was ignoring me, Derek would talk to me. Help me when there were problems at school. Derek and Reed are the same age so I never understood why he could act as though he could see me but Reed couldn’t. Wouldn’t was more like it. When we were in the halls I was no one, but he’d always go out of his way it seemed at home to run into me.

It all changed, or so I thought, the week before he left for the University of Houston. There were mistaken touches that I knew weren’t by accident, moments I knew he was going to say something. Then the night before he left we’d all been at a party. The only reason I was there was because I’d been invited by Derek. When I got there, Reed was shocked to say the least. Reed kept drifting his eyes back to me. The girl he had gone with had taken a back seat and he was no longer showing her interest. He spent the whole night with me and would only leave me with Derek. It was odd but nothing prepared me for the moment he walked me home.

You’ll be careful, won’t you? Reed asked. His voice startled me, what was he talking about? I mean Derek and I won’t be here to look out for you anymore. I was taken aback by his words. Part of me wanted to fight with him and tell him that he ignores me but I didn’t want to ruin his mood or the fact that it was just him and I here.

"I can look after myself, don’t worry I’ll make sure Danni is okay too. You go off and become that big time
