About this ebook

**VOLUME FIVE**
Former Detective turned Private Investigator, Elise Martin feels a lot like Atlas-- always trudging uphill. Only everyone thinks it's a chip on her shoulder instead of the world. She'd beg to differ. But now she's got rent due, ramen is getting old, and her former boss, the Police Chief, is making life difficult. So she'll take any job that comes her way. When a fateful encounter drops a security detail and potential case in her lap, who is she to say no? Too bad the man hiring her is one smooth, sexy, gorgeous a**hole. Like, can't-stand-to-share-your-air kind of jerk. But jerk that he may be, he's also a billionaire, and that means his check will cash.

Jameson Locke is many things. Handsome, charming, meticulous. He's head of a security and safe company and one of the world's wealthy elite. He's also ruthless, calculating, and bored. When he meets Elise Martin, he can't shake her from his mind. Her curves and quick tongue inspire his need to dominate. To control. Even though he knows he can't get close to her, he needs something interesting. A challenge. Elise Martin promises to be that and more.

Elise and Jameson find themselves locked in a game of wits and resources.

Locke isn't a man to lose.

Locke, Stock, and Barrel - Myra Song

    Locke

Y ou should have led with that, Elise. I’m growling and I know it sounds unreasonable, but there is too much on my goddamned plate and it all started with this Private Investigator and that stupid ruby. It’s due back at the museum tomorrow and without it, I’ve been prepping for a large lawsuit and terrible publicity.

She shrugs and starts to get out of the car. I needed to know about you first, Locke. Decide how I feel about you.

That drenches my anger in ice. Jesus, who am I becoming? Life was easier when it was just me. I could control all the pieces. I could control myself. Now? Now I feel like I’m so wrapped up in Elise that I can’t juggle everything. I have to find the ruby, I have to find Blakely, and I have to stop him before he hurts her.

Because he will. He’ll hurt her to hurt me, and it’ll work.

How do you feel about me?

I’m not sure, Elise admits, and I hate it. I hate it because I know what I want to hear. I want to hear that she’s as hooked on me as I am on her. That she spends every second she isn’t with me thinking about me the way I do her. What I want to hear is that what started as a physical connection a week ago is promising to be something more. I need to hear it, because I’m not able to say those things.

I’ve never said those things. To anyone. I told her I was a bored billionaire, that I stole things just because I could, but that isn’t the whole truth. No one knows the whole truth. If I could say it, then maybe I could say how I feel, but I’ve been keeping these things locked down so tightly I don’t know how to open up again.

    Not sure?

Shrugging, she hops out and pauses in the open door, the dinging of my dashboard piercing the silence. You’re everything I never wanted in my life again, Locke. You’re messy, a complication. You break the law, you take from others, you ruin lives— I start to protest and she stops me with a look. "You do. You ruined Hollins’ and you helped to ruin mine. When I’m with you, it’s like all the parts of myself I’ve so carefully constructed are disassembled. It’s terrifying."

My laughter is a harsh bark. How wonderfully ironic. She’s saying the exact same things I’m feeling about her. Are we so similar? So evenly matched? If we’re the same half, then how can we ever be whole together?

But, she ventures, I can’t walk away. There’s more to you, Locke. You’re a mystery. And you know the thing about detectives and P.I.’s, right? We can’t leave an unsolved mystery.

It hits close. So close that I almost rock back from it. So you’re with me because I intrigue you.

That, and amazing sex. She slams the door and walks to the house, leaving me in the low light of my car. Amazing sex, indeed. I need a plan, but it all hinges on whether she’s telling the truth about the Kane ruby. So I get out of the car and follow.

When we get inside, I disarm my security. Ben’s probably been watching, so I’m not too worried, but he and I are going to need to have a chat tomorrow. With Blakely around, even my fortress of a home needs some hefty upgrades. I won’t risk Elise.

Do you have any wine? Elise asks, sauntering toward the kitchen.

I don’t know, do you have a ruby? My skin is itching and I realize she must know how much this is driving me crazy. Elise enjoys having the upper hand. I, however, sincerely hate it. I’m a man who needs the upper hand always.

Yes, she says, but with uncertainty laced through. Well, I suspect. It’s a hunch, but a strong one.

I hired you, Elise, I warn. She said she knows where it is, but she’s acting nonchalant. It’s killing me. For all the tension, for all the doubts, it won’t matter. Elise is tallying up some punishment for this, because, like Blakely says, I need to let off steam. It’s her own fault she’s provoking me.

You aren’t fun, she pouts, and walks toward my play room.

Through gritted teeth, I mumble, "You are about to find out
