About this ebook

A world within a world - a world within our world.
A new order is established among the preternatural communities as the alpha werewolf Balfour is elected new governor, but peace is yet to come.
Amber misses her passionate moments with Balfour as he keeps getting busy as new ruler, but that is not the only problem – something new appears in the Forechester Keep, in the form of an attractive red-haired woman.
She is warmly received by Balfour, who is dangerously attracted by her great power and beauty, but Amber suspects something bigger lies behind and she will not just sit by.
Meanwhile, Balfour starts to develop an unprecedented aggressiveness inside the reserve, almost losing control of his own power. Amber is not afraid of this wild, animalistic force in the grip of which Balfour is caught, and is not ready to give up everything she's fought for – not yet.
The young fae doesn't know that the enemy is already inside and the war has yet to start: an all-out war between witches and werewolves which will endanger the life of her loved ones.

et my ‘next releases’ notification, I’m publishing a second Series soon!

    Chapter 1 – Balfour

The forest was quiet. The chill of the night still hung between the trunks and tendrils of mist swirled on the forest floor, making everything seem surreal and magical. I took a deep breath, sucking the icy air into my lungs. It was good to get away from the keep for a change. Since I’d been inaugurated as Haden Gray’s replacement I’d been swallowed by work and responsibilities.

Amber stood next to me and I could feel her like a gentle, supportive presence. I hadn’t seen her a lot, either. It felt like I’d been consumed by my new position.

I love it out here, she said. I nodded. Being out in the woods was in my nature as a werewolf and I missed being able to let the wolf loose. I hadn’t had a chance just to run wild outside of full moon.

It had been an honor to be chosen as their leader. I had been the alpha of the pack for a while and I knew what leading was all about, what it felt like when you had so many lives in your hands, but this was different. This was on a whole new scale. I didn’t only have a pack of werewolves to look after now, but humans, witches, fae and vampires, too.

You can shift, you know, Amber said, turning to me. I know you want to. Need to.

I stepped closer to her and put my hand on her cheek. Her skin was warm. Her white hair hung to her hips and she had flames in her eyes, I could feel the fire burning in every part of her, but still she was my stability. She leaned into my touch and smiled.

What did I do to deserve you? I asked.

She rolled her eyes at my cliché but she was smiling. I smiled, too, kissed her and then stepped back. I needed to shift, she was right. I got rid of my clothes and left them in a pile on the ground. Amber’s eyes were on mine. I couldn’t tell what she was thinking – if she was worried or nervous or something else.

I closed my eyes and focused on the animal inside me, shutting out the world. It lifted its head, as if it had been sleeping deeply and I’d woken it up. It shook itself out, stretched and yawned. I’d been neglecting my wolf. Being the leader of the entire preternatural community had given me enough power that I could subdue the wolf completely. It was almost like being human. I should have made more time for the animal.

    I was still finding balance.

The shift came on slowly. I wasn’t used to it anymore. Shifting within seconds was a muscle you had to exercise or, like with anything else, you lost it. The animal took its form gradually and I was aware of everything that happened throughout the metamorphosis. My bones popped out and shifted under my skin, building a new skeleton. Hair sprouted on my skin, covering me and I curled in a ball on the ground to make the transition easier. For a moment, everything was awhirl, the world spinning. I couldn’t find my balance, my center, I didn’t know which way was up and which was down.

The last phase of the shift happened the fastest. I slipped into my wolf form and my body remembered what to do. I stretched out again and shook my fur. My body felt powerful. I stepped around on the soft mulch of the forest floor and looked for Amber. She’d moved out of the way and she was leaning against a tree. She nodded at me.

I didn’t hesitate. I shot into the forest, weaving through the trees, going as fast as I could without hitting something. I felt stiff at first, but as I ran I shook it off and my body became lighter, swifter, more agile. I ran, faster and faster, and the forest bent itself around me. It was as if the trees moved beside me, out of my way. The spiny shrubs and tangled roots weren’t a problem.

I reached a clearing and stopped to catch my breath. I hung my tongue out, heaving and panting. I sniffed the air. Nothing out of place. Far behind me the walls of Forechester Keep stretched into the sky, but I wasn’t there now. I was still in the same forest but I was free.

    For now.

I threw my head back and howled. It was a lonely, eerie sound. It felt good just to let loose.

I didn’t know for how long I was out in the forest, but eventually I made my way back to where Amber was waiting for me. She sat on a fallen log, reading a book. When I appeared among the trees she looked up at me. She lowered one hand and I came closer, sniffing it. She petted my head like I was a dog. I liked the attention.

I stepped back. Not too much of it – I was still the alpha. More now than ever before. It took less time to shift back than I thought it would. When I was human again I found my clothes and put them on. Only then did I go to Amber and sit down next to her. I draw her to me and hugged her. Her body was always warm – a furnace – and I pulled heat and love from her. As my mate, even though she wasn’t a wolf, I drew a lot of strength from her.

    You doing okay? she asked.

I’m a little torn, to be honest, I said.

    Why?

I took a deep breath. I feel isolated. From the pack, from my people.

    She nodded.

I mean, it’s great that I’m in charge around here. A lot of things are changing now because of it and it was long overdue… I just don’t feel like this is where I should be.

She frowned. Do you think someone else should take over?

No. I shook my head. There aren’t any good candidates right now, no one who would do this place any good. I know that they made the right choice electing me… I just feel stuck. My wolf is wilting. Adam is in charge of the pack now. I feel almost obsolete. I know it doesn’t make sense.

She nodded. I get what you’re saying. Everything that would normally define you as a wolf is now on the background.

I nodded. That’s exactly it. I’m not a lone wolf, but I feel like one.

Don’t lone wolves struggle with control issues?

It was true. Lone wolves did have issues with control. The pack was a unit and the alpha helped everyone keep control of their animal. Lone wolves couldn’t control the change or the lust for blood. I wasn’t a lone wolf because I was still connected to my pack.

Unless something drastic happens I’m very far from losing control. You know how much power I have now…

Amber nodded and took my hand, interlacing our
