About this ebook

Clan: Season 3, Episode 9. Calum’s Duty
Baroness York is not used to being given orders, but when the King's agent hands her a document and tells her to deliver it to Calum Maclean, she knows she must obey.
The young conscripts are marching to London to be trained to die as the first into battle. Calum must reach them before it is too late, but the spy's document is intended to stop him doing exactly that.

Calum and John arrive at Fort Augustus and know they should be riding south. The Mackenzie are at the fort and waiting for Calum.

With the Mackenzies planning to murder Calum and John, the highland conscripts are in mortal danger at the hands of the Albino's convicts who are waiting to ambush them. Things couldn't get worse.

Until Baroness York takes a hand in the game. Calum and John must go south, but every moment the highlanders march farther away. Towards an enemy that will fall upon them like a pack of hungry wolves.

Everything Calum has brought him to this moment, but nothing could ever prepare him for the most dangerous fight of his life. Where losing will cost the lives of hundreds of young men whose lives have not yet begun.

Calum and John should turn away. Their mission is beyond hopeless. But they ride south towards the danger. As they always do. But this time looks like the last.

    Calum’s Duty

Beatrice York felt the blood boil up through her cheeks and turned away to look out of the window at the soldiers marching past in the growing dusk. She forced herself to breathe slowly, to regain her composure and to think of a suitable response, then turned around slowly and gave the thin, elegant man her hardest look.

Please indulge me, she said slowly. In order that I am not mistaken in my interpretation of what you are saying.

The spymaster took a short step to stand close to her, too close for comfort. She backed away a little.

My dear Baroness, I believe you understand me perfectly well. He raised his hand to cut off her response. But please do take a moment if it will help you.

He turned to the window the viceroy had just finished with and watched the slovenly redcoats milling around the castle grounds.

The viceroy coughed, but he continued to watch the undisciplined men.

You, she said, her voice shaking a little, a man I have never met and with no credentials, has the… the temerity to barge into my home and—

I think you will find that this is the king’s castle, and as such, it is his governor’s home, which, I might add, you appropriated without consent.

She spluttered for a moment until she found her voice. Is that what this is about? She looked over her shoulder at the sitting room door. "The duke has complained to the king and he has sent one of his… minions?"

The spymaster chuckled. Minion? I have never been a minion before. He waved her towards her striped sofa. Please take a seat. He didn’t say before you fall down, but thought it loudly. And perhaps we can discuss my proposal a little more… calmly.

She glanced at the sofa but remained standing. "Yes, let us discuss your proposal, shall we? She looked again at the sofa, strode over to it and sat down and waited for him to sit on one of the straight-backed chairs. If you will allow me to summarise your proposal. Take away the false pleasantries and what remains is that I am to do exactly as you say. She squinted at him, but it had no effect. Or—and please correct me if I am in error with this—or you will have me removed. She raised her hands as if in surrender. No, forgive me, I believe the term you used was disappeared."

He smiled. Your summary appears to cover the main points very concisely.

She wanted to strike the man more than she’d wanted to strike anyone in her whole life. And there
