Pretty As A Picture - Eve Craig

    Chapter One

Robin Conrad walked into the old grocery store and looked around. Her footsteps echoed in the empty space. The last vestiges of the previous business were still present. Several advertising signs from out-of-business food and soda companies clung to the walls above the grungy outlines where shelves had once been attached .

It needs a lot of work. Jason Belford, the landlord, followed her in and studied the place just as closely as she did. He was a tall man with a shaggy beard, a big belly, and kind eyes. I’ll be honest with you. I picked it up cheap in a tax sale, and I haven’t done anything with it. If you want to paint the walls and the ceiling, I’ll knock half off your first month’s rent.

Frowning at the dirty walls, Robin thought about how much work it would take. The ceilings had to be at least twelve feet tall, if not fifteen. She would have to wash everything thoroughly and possibly use more than one coat of paint. But she didn’t have a lot of money to start up her business anyway. Are there any restrictions on color?

Jason shrugged. Keep the ceiling white, and don’t do anything crazy like black. Beyond that, I think I’m okay with it. If you decide to leave when your lease is up, I’ll probably have to repaint it anyway.

Robin let her imagination run wild as she explored the large space. She hadn’t been pleased when the retail clothing store where she had worked as manager had suddenly laid her off after ten years, but she knew this was going to be the best time to live her dreams. She imagined each wall in a different color. When she was able to afford them, there would be plenty of room higher up on the walls for racks of rolled backdrops. The front of the old store was lined with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. I think this might work.

What did you say you wanted to do with the place? the landlord asked as he frowned at a dead spider on the window sill.

I’m opening a photography studio, Robin explained. The words sounded almost unrealistic on her lips. She had done some portraits here and there on the side as a hobby, but she had never given thought to making a living at it until her regular biweekly paychecks were yanked out from underneath her. The small severance package was enough to keep her going for a few months, but it wouldn’t last forever.

Jason nodded. I never thought about it like that, but that would be a good use for it. There’s just street parking and a couple of slots in the alley, but you wouldn’t need much. The bathroom is good-sized, and there’s a store room in the back for your props. He led her to the back of the building, flicking on lights to show her.

Everything back there was equally dirty. She would have to spend a week just getting things clean before she could even start painting. But Robin also knew there were precious few commercial buildings for rent in Hibiscus, Georgia. She’d looked. "I’ll
