While an English major at college, I wrote a column which was published weekly. I have been writing ever since. The old West and Los Angeles in the forties are eras which lend themselves to tales of romance, courage, and fast paced adventure. I particularly enjoy writing stories about the mail order brides who fearlessly took a chance and traveled West, hoping to find love and a better future. Many of the locales that I write about are places that I have either traveled through or actually lived in. I try to make my works richly accurate. My desire is to provide you with an entertaining and fun read. When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children.

Mail Order Bride - Kenneth Markson

To my wife and children, always.

    Chapter 1

I 'm sorry, Ellen, Mrs. Croft said at the end of the work day.  I'm going to have to let you go.

The elderly woman spoke haltingly and with empathy, knowing full well the effect her words would have on her young employee.  Hannah Croft had grown quite fond of Ellen during the past couple of years that she had worked for her at the dress shop, and the last thing that she wanted to do was to cause her pain.  She had dreaded this moment, hoping to stave off its inevitability, but now there was no choice.

Mrs. Croft was right about the effect her announcement would have upon the young woman.  Ellen felt like a lash had struck her across the face.  Her mother had died three months ago, and now this.

It had been a bad year, and suddenly things were about to get worse.  Stunned, her pretty blue eyes looked imploringly at Hannah.

Is there anything that I can do, Hannah? she asked in despair.  I thought that you were satisfied with me.

More than satisfied, Mrs. Croft said, placing her hand comfortingly on the younger woman's shoulder.  You've been an excellent worker for me here in the dress shop, and a fine seamstress.

There was a tearful expression on her face as she continued.

It has absolutely nothing to do with you, my dear Ellen, she said sadly.  As you know, business has been terrible for quite a while.  I've been barely able to make ends meet.  Now that gold fever has infected San Francisco, and many have run off to strike it rich, things have gotten even worse.

    Hannah began breathing heavily.

What you don't know, she continued, is that my health has deteriorated as of late.  I've had some serious pains, and it appears that my body can no longer take the current stress.

Oh no, Ellen said, clutching her hand.

You always were a kind girl, Ellen, Hannah smiled.  I'll miss that, and your pleasantness most of all.

    Her face became somber.

My doctor has advised me that I'll be okay, provided that I leave this situation, and lead a far more peaceful life.  I have a daughter with a family back East, who has agreed to take me in.  I've decided to close the shop at the end of the month, and go there to live.

There was a sorrowful expression in her eyes as she spoke.

Sometimes in life you'll find my dear, that you have little choice over certain matters.  At least in this case, you'll have a few weeks to decide on a course for yourself.

When she had finished speaking, the pair of them hugged.

    Chapter 2

Ellen headed back to her small, cramped room that evening with
