    Restoring - HEZEKIAH MORRIS

    C H A P T E R  1

    A FRESH START

Istepped off that Greyhound bus and the air was smelling fresh. My eyes were all big, looking out at all the tall buildings, new faces. I was in awe. Here I was, Hezekiah Morris in Greensboro, NC, fresh out of rehab. Yes, I knew I was getting ready to start a new journey in my life—clean and sober. I was thinking to myself, I got to do this thing this time around . I had people counting on me, man. My daughter mostly, but I got this. I'm a survivor. As I waved for a taxi driver to take me to my new home, I thought to myself, Greensboro here comes Hell .

I stepped my foot into my new residence, four men resided there and they all were trying to stay clean and sober. The president of the house was from my hometown so he is leading me through all the rules and dealings that go on in the house. I'm soaking it all in. I got to my room where I had to share with another guy because I was the least senior guy. I hollered at my new roommate and he seemed cool but they say he couldn’t seem to find a job. I unpacked, relaxed, and thought about my next move. See, this game of life is like a chessboard you have to strategically calculate your moves. You got to be precise on your first move, the one that is going to lead you to the top. I started thinking, man all these opportunities I had and I keep messing up. Is there something wrong with me? Does the devil really have a hold on me? But, hey, this time I am a changed man. I'm clean and ready to start living my life. My first conquest is finding a job so I can support myself.

I rose up in this new city; I needed to figure out the bus schedule so I can get around. I got my first taste of the city and I love it, all the different races and of course the women, all kinds of women. I was thinking to myself just give me time, I'm coming for y’all!

See, as I told you in the first book I love the chase more than actually having it. I like the game to see if I can break your mind down and fill your head with my words. If I can sexually reach your soul without even touching you. Yeah, I know Casanova Morris!

I got to my first job interview and the supervisor—a young guy straight out of college—interviews me and we click instantly. We were football fans so we talked mostly about football and he said, OK you have the job and the pay is good. I was like check. I made the first move on the board. See, to me, having a job is a way and means to living and getting what I want like, women, clothes, and cars. I know money brings all of these things. As I was strolling through Greensboro, checking out the sites I was finding out a little history about this city I was in. Greensboro has five big colleges but the two main colleges are North Carolina A&T—an all-black college—and Bennett College—an all-women's college.

The downtown scenery is amazing. The buildings, bars, strip clubs, and all that would entice a man’s sexual desires. I was thinking to myself, yes sir I am in the right place. I had never in my lifetime seen so many successful black people in one city. I was in awe. So, as I was looking around, I was thinking of my next move. I decided I was going to learn everything I could about Greensboro because I felt that I was going to make that place my permanent home.

I started feeling that I had come to the right place at the right time to get myself together but deep inside my desires was rising up inside me. Here I am a new dude in a new town.

    No family.

    Nobody knows me.

Everything I see is at my disposal. I’m either going to live like I’m in heaven or I am going to make my stay a living hell.

I started my job and was put on a machine used to cut door sills for Lowe's. I had a guy train me who was from Africa who didn’t
