About this ebook

New York State of Mind 1.0 is three exclusive interviews, and 166 links to singles, videos, interviews and tales.

A fascinating genuine narrative formed in the crucible of Golden Age Hip-Hop mindfulness.

New York State of Mind 1.0, the 7th book in the series, provides you with a real flavour of the personalities, in all their raw forms, who breathed life into the streets of the city, taking the music to new heights and in entirely new directions.

Tragedy Khadafi is as real as it gets. Through impressive MC skills and a formidable street reputation, he lived the life of a real hoodlum, surviving gunshot wounds, stabbings and broken bones. The strong lyrical message of Brand Nubian reflects on the group's identity as Five-Percenters and the philosophy of the Nation of Gods and Earth, while Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth arrived on the scene in the midst of a Hip-Hop impasse of sorts.

New York State of Mind 1.0 is a candid look deep inside the psyche of each and an examination of what makes them tick. Take a ride alongside them and learn how they made their mark in a generation.

Intelligent Hoodlum a.k.a. Tragedy Khadafi, born Percy Chapman on August 13, 1971, is about as real as it does when it comes to Queens, NY and its infamous Queensbridge Housing Projects. Known far and wide for his influential MC skills and formidable reputation on the streets, he has unfortunately lived the life of a true hoodlum. In and out of incarceration for selling drugs and robbery, he has also been shot and stabbed and suffered broken noses and arms.

Tragedy began his career in rhyme as a pre-teen, alongside DJ Hotday, initially under the guidance of a man named Larry. He hustled his way up the MC ladder one step at a time by rhyming in parks, music seminar elevators, and clubs under the names of MC Jade and MC Percy before convincing his Queensbridge Houses neighbour Marley Marl to provide him with a chance. He then gradually worked his way towards becoming a certified junior member of the legendary Juice Crew alongside senior members Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap and MC Shan, all while maintaining his street movements. Found guilty of robbery at the age of 16, he served time in the maximum security state prison, Elmira Correctional Facility, where he was conscripted and indoctrinated by the Five-Percent Nation. He then released into public life as Intelligent
