Show Pekingese - Origin, History, Standard of Points, How to Breed, Rear, Treat, and Prepare for Exhibition - Minna Loftus Allen

    Preface.

During the last decade or so a number of monographs have appeared on the Pekingese, and the breed has also been dealt with in larger works which embrace the canine species generally; for that reason one finds some little diffidence in bringing yet another treatise before the public, even though it contains much about the breed that is new. Whilst I am the first to admit that many of these previous works have been of a very high standard from a literary point of view, and have in many cases given very valuable technical and veterinary information (to the latter at least of which my work does not aspire), yet all appear to me to have fallen short in connection with the History of the breed, and many have made what to one like myself who recalls those early days, are very serious errors.

This article tempted me to try other works from the same pen, and in them I found many more inaccuracies of a like character, and so I passed to efforts of other experts, only to find some of the errors perpetuated.

Thus I came to the conclusion that it might not be amiss if one like myself, probably infinitely less versed in literary qualifications, and with no claim to highly technical knowledge, but with a very full personal acquaintance with the earliest show Pekingese in England, were to give a round, unvarnished history of the breed as a show dog from its very earliest beginnings in
