Acknowledgments
In every creative endeavor, I believe there is a village standing behind The Magic Maker, the one who is pulling something out of the ether and into a physical form. In this case, I am The Magic Maker (creator) and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the village of supporters who stand behind me, encouraging and cheering me on to the finish line.
First, I want to thank my husband Jim, my love mate. His eyes twinkle every time I read my stories to him. When I ask for comments or help, he is there. Unwavering and constant. His love and belief in me knows no bounds.
My children Dane and Athena, for their unconditional love and belief in me … always.
My mother Marie, who has shown me how to be a writer by her example. I have watched her write my whole life. Her love of literature and preserving our family history inspires me. Her passion for my writing and her encouragement have fueled my creative process.
Other family members who walk beside me, always listen to me, and constantly reflect love and encouragement no matter what.
My amazing circle of friends (writers and non-writers), all Magic Makers themselves, their love and confidence is expansive. The torches they hold for me are limitless and always help me find my way.
My editor Emily, who is not only incredible at what she does, but who has helped open the flood gates when I was stuck, and helped me feel safe throughout this process. My safety net.
And lastly, for my four muses: Delight, Creativity, Inspiration, and Abundance, who show up again and again. Without them there would be no book.
Author’s Note
As a reader, I am always curious about the story behind the story. Who is the author? How did this story come to be? What parts of a story are true?
Looking behind the curtain of something that was created is, to me, like a mystery to solve and I am very fond of all forms of mystery. Unfolding the story behind the story scratches this itch for me, and it is from this passionate place that I want to share a glimpse into the world of how this book came into existence.
My story starts at a writing and healing retreat in the middle of nowhere, an hour’s drive from a little Oregon town called Selma. The retreat was completely off the grid, in a canyon next to the Illinois River. On one of my visits before I wrote this book, there was a conversation around the dinner table about some of the history of this area and it was the first time I heard that there used
to be gold mining in the area. It was interesting, but not really my kind of thing, so it went in one ear and out the other. I have never really been interested in anything connected to cowboys, miners,
or that time period. I am not a miner’s daughter, nor is mining in my family history. I come from a lineage of potato farmers down in southern Oregon.
So, when this book came through me it was a big surprise—not only to me, but to those who know me. It is unlike anything I would normally write.
In March 2016, I came for my first stay at this cabin in the deep backwoods—a stay that almost didn’t happen because I was informed by my son, who was going there to work, that the cabin I would be staying in seemed to be haunted. The words used were very creepy, and scary (this came from my son who is a very big man and not a scared kind of person).
Now, without going into too much detail, I will say that normally I wouldn’t bat an eye at news like this because I have been a practicing Feng Shui consultant and Space Clearing specialist for 20 years and, as it would happen, one who fell into a niche of space clearing for haunted properties. I seem to be really good at it. But, at this time in my life, I had just passed the one year mark of surviving an aggressive cancer therapy of chemo and radiation that was so devastating it almost ended my life. I was still feeling fragile and convalescing. I had started to go back to work, but
only easy jobs. I wasn’t looking for work and especially not a job that felt this big. I was disheartened by the news and thought, no way, this isn’t gonna happen for me, not at this time. But the funny thing is, as I went to bed that very night (and during the days to follow), the cabin showed up in my meditation and wanted to connect, so we did. We began to be friends and things started to soften, and this presence even asked for help. As each day went by, I felt the joy come back as I realized I could help this cabin, especially now that it softened toward me. I believed I had the energy to do this work, which translated to I could use this as a writing, healing retreat after all.
And then, as the
