    CHAPTER ONE

    Blake Barkley sat out on the steps of his porch, whittling away at the piece of wood he held in his hands. His grandpa sat in the rocker, humming Amazing Grace in his deep baritone voice that had become a little scratchy with old age. His grandpa still had a voice that people wanted to hear and he loved the crotchety old man more than his own life.

    He sighed and tried to relax.  If he admitted the truth to himself, his mind was on one little lady in town that he’d only met about two months ago. Everyone called her Miss Elsie. Came to town to be a mail order bride, but when she met old Parker Hanks, she up and told him she wouldn’t marry him in a million years and he could forget her and order him up another mail order bride his own age.

    Blake grinned. He was standing at the stage depot the day she arrived, dressed in a beautiful white dress and hat, ready for marrying. Old Parker was there too and pulled the door open, moving aside to let other people get down from the stage. When Miss Elsie lifted her skirts, showing a hint of ankle, the men that noticed whistled in appreciation. Parker pulled his gun and waved it around, not targeting anyone in particular, until they fled off on foot down the street. Everyone in town knew whom she was since Parker had told everyone she was arriving today on the stage and showed them her likeness she’d sent to him. The men were amazed old Parker was going to marry a young woman when he was about seventy years old himself.
