    Chapter 1.

Hayai Kaminari in the guise of the student, Oringo Po, enters the headquarters of Amalgamation Inc. He is wearing spectacles, a flashy black suit jacket and trouser combination, white shirt with no tie, and carrying a thin smooth titanium briefcase.

The entryway to the headquarters has a 3D x-raying machine, which detects no visible or concealed weapons upon Hayai as he approaches the reception desk in the lobby. Hayai is closely watched by menacing and professional looking security guards.

What is your business? the receptionist asks.

I have business with Arjan Smith, I believe he’s expecting me, Hayai replies with a winsome smile. The name’s Oringo Po.

Mr Po, 1 o’clock appointment, the receptionist says. Just a moment please, while I check whether Mr Smith is ready to receive you and these gentlemen search you. I trust you do not mind being searched?

    Be my guest, Hayai answers.

The receptionist picks up the phone on her desk and pushes a single button with the etched symbol of a hawk on it.

Mr Smith, your 1 o’clock appointment, Mr Po, is here, the receptionist says, speaking into her phone.

As two guards approach him, Hayai offers a thin smile while holding out his arms.

That won’t be necessary, Guard 1 proclaims.

Hayai is being watched by state-of-the-art smart cameras with their observations being monitored in an off-site surveillance centre. A sophisticated 3D x-ray scan reveals to those in the surveillance centre that nothing is concealed upon Hayai’s person.

If you’ll just step this way please and open your briefcase for us, Guard 2 states back in the lobby. Slowly please.

Hayai walks over to the simple metallic table he has been directed towards.

It’s just my thesis, a voice recorder and my pen in there, Hayai explains, opening the briefcase.

There are brief smiles exchanged between the guards and Hayai.

No laptop, mobile phone or mp3 player; what kind of student are you? Guard 1 asks.

A very poor and lonely one, who’s hoping his thesis can change that if he doesn’t have to speak with you kind gentlemen for too long, Hayai replies.

This time Hayai’s smile is met with the impassive faces of both guards. Sarcasm only went so far with these guys apparently.

Fine, let’s get on with this, Guard 1 says matter-of-factly. Please place the contents of your briefcase on the table.

Anger causes mistakes Hayai muses as he carefully removes a pile of papers from the briefcase and lays the pile on the table. The papers that make up the thesis are laced together, gift like, with some simple string. The heading on the top page reads, ‘Potassium: A Study by Oringo Po’.

Next, Hayai extracts a black unbranded voice recorder followed by a transparent blue ballpoint pen. Guard 1 clicks the pen once, peers at the nib, and then clicks it a second time to retract the nib. Guard 1 then removes an unbranded cassette tape from the voice recorder and places it on the table. Guard 2 follows this by withdrawing a smooth metallic, palm-sized hexagonal shaped object from his inner jacket pocket and begins to sweep over the contents of the table with the tool. Each item receives an individual scan while Guard 1 meticulously studies Hayai’s demeanour.

In the surveillance centre, on separate tablet PCs, there are 3D representations of the table, briefcase and objects respectively. As Guard 2 scans the objects, numerous streams of data appear alongside each object rendering such as: ‘material: non-complex plastic’ and ‘paper: grade 1A, manufactured in Saga, Japan’. On one tablet PC, three real-time models of Hayai’s face, hands and heart are displayed. There are statistics next to headings such as: ‘heart-rate’, ‘porosity’ and ‘facial tension’.

In the lobby, Guard 2 completes his scanning and slips the hexagonal tool back into the same inner jacket pocket. Both guards take a step away from the table and await further instructions.

An unidentified person speaks into a microphone in the surveillance centre, their voice is relayed to the guards via their wireless earpieces:

All scans clear. Mr Smith has been apprised of the results and awaits his guest, the surveillance centre voice says.

Guard 1 presses a small circular button on the left sleeve of his jacket. The button is blue and features a symbol depicting a mouse holding some cheese. This button lies beside a yellow counterpart featuring a cat holding a mouse.

The receptionist looks at a mini TFT screen on her desk, where the image of a mouse holding some cheese appears.

Mr Smith will see you now, the receptionist says, raising her voice yet remaining seated.

Hayai is directed to repack his briefcase by the guards as they watch on. In the surveillance centre, one of the tablet PCs shows, ‘relief status: unsuspicious’.

Briefcase repacked, Hayai is escorted by Guard 2 to an elevator. There are no call buttons or signs indicating what floor the elevator is currently on. Suddenly and soundlessly, a single elevator door slides open to the left to reveal two more guards waiting within.

This way please, Guard 3 beckons from within.

As he steps into the elevator, Hayai can’t help but notice the obvious size difference between himself and the guards flanking him. Both guards stand at a height of six feet seven inches with a weight of 250lbs in comparison to Hayai’s six
