About this ebook

Alicia McLane works in a factory. She is an average employee earning her living in a manufacturing plant. Her life changes when a new supervisor comes and starts bullying and harassing her. Alicia decides to fight him back. Unfortunately, her complaints against the supervisor are handled by the company in a way that shows that anti-harassment and anti-bullying procedures are violated even by the higher management. As the events unfold Alicia is forced to fight for her job and for her sanity.
Alicia’s story shows the difficulties the victims of bullying and harassment may face if they decide to report it to the management, and how some companies purposely mishandle harassment reports just to avoid the liability.

    Chapter 1

I walk into her office and get dizzy at the thought of how ridiculous the whole situation is. My employer, out of fear, decides to pay for my psychotherapy. One of the largest companies in this country buys an argument in a potential court case. No! I’m wrong. I buy the company an argument in the potential court case. The score: one to zero for the company.

    - Welcome to our first session, Alicia – she says when I try to decide which couch I should take.

If I chose the couch that is opposite her armchair I’ll give her an opportunity to watch my every move. If I chose the couch that is near the window, and which seems to be more comfortable, but makes eye contact impossible, she’ll think that I hide things she was hired to get out of me.

    - It doesn’t matter where you sit. Just make yourself comfortable – she says, noticing my hesitation.

    - Alright – I say and chose the couch near the window. – I like the dim light here.

She follows my gaze around the lamps standing in the corners – Do you like dim light? – she asks and moves her armchair, so she can sit opposite me.

Shit! Alicia, take my advice. The next time you are send to a psychiatrist take their armchair as soon as you enter their office. Otherwise, forget about the possibility of making any decision with regard to your life.

    - Alicia? Are you alright? – she asks.

I look at her and smile widely – Of course. The light of the night lamp or Chinese lanterns calms me down.

    - That kind of light calms down many people – she states and then takes a deep breath. – What was the problem with our today’s appointment? I heard there was a misunderstanding.

    - That’s right – I sigh heavily.

    - What happened between you and the Human Resources Officer?

    - Maria couldn’t understand why you made an appointment that colluded with my working hours.

    - I see. I have no direct contact with your employer. Marie – Moore is the person responsible for that. Her job is to monitor your recovery; she made your today’s appointment with me. She is also responsible for monitoring your return to work; hence her intervention in resolving the issue with your employer. As far as I know, your employer has been informed that some of our appointments will be made within your working hours. Is that alright with you?

"What a chain! A company that tries to get rid of an employee hires another company, which in turn hires someone else to prove that the employee is out of their mind. It turns out there’s no other way to get rid of a problem that could end up in court. And then, the chances of the win could be fifty- fifty. The thought of
