Andrea Pearson

Andrea, a Brigham Young University graduate, is an avid reader and outdoor enthusiast (hiking, fishing, boating, biking, spending time in the Rocky Mountains, and taking walks). She spent a year and a half serving the Spanish speaking community in Toronto, Canada, and is fluent in 2 1⁄2 languages. She plays several instruments, not including the banjo, and loves putting together musical arrangements. Her favorite sports are basketball and football, though several knee surgeries and incurably awful coordination prevent her from playing them.Andrea is always in the mood for a good movie with close friends and family (especially her husband and mom), with a large glass of milk and a bowl of overly buttered popcorn nearby. She also enjoys oil painting, making earrings, squeezing every bit of oxygen out of Ziploc bags, and she hopes to someday travel to Italy and Alaska.Andrea has published three books.

    Chapter One

Nick shoved his hands in his pockets, hating the feeling of eyes on him as he and his new friend, Jessie, walked away from the grocery store. As long as he didn’t react to the people staring, they’d eventually grow accustomed to seeing him around, he was sure of it. He just hated the awkward and uncomfortable feeling that came from them watching.

He and his mom had just moved to Geode City, a small town of only a couple thousand people in the middle of nowhere. School started soon, and thank goodness—summer had never felt so long in his entire life. He knew that he’d feel more at home once he got into the daily routine of assignments, classes, and teachers’ lectures.

Nick glanced at Jessie as she took a breath from talking about the town’s history. Where did the city get its name? he asked.

She pointed at the hill the city abutted against. It’s an active volcano. It spurts out geodes occasionally.

Nick nodded—he’d already heard about the volcano and the occasional steam that issued from it. Jessie’s talking resumed. She started telling him about the houses they passed, and he listened intently, eager to learn more. The farther they went, though, the more his brain muddled with all the information. He’d never remember anything—it wasn’t possible, so he let his mind wander instead.

He and Jessie had met in the town’s only grocery store. His mom was the store’s new general manager—the reason they’d moved here—and Jessie’s mom worked in the deli. Jessie’s dad was the sheriff of Geode City.

Her chatter continued as they approached an old, rundown
