ARTICOLI DETERMINATIVI IL, LA, L’ / DEFINITE ARTICLES ıL, LA, L’

Sostantivi = nouns in the Italian dictionary are indicated with the letter (s) but never alone:

Accompanied by the letter (m) when a noun is in the masculine form as in (s.m.)

Accompanied by the letter (f) when a noun is in the feminine form as in (s.f.)

    Gatto(s.m.)

    Casa(s.f.)

Notice both nouns start with a consonant letter, in that case we put the articles:

IL (in front of the sostantivo maschile = mascular noun) as in : Il gatto

LA (in front of the sostantivo femminile = femminine noun) as in: La casa

And when a noun starts with a vowel, in that case we put the article:

L’ (the letter L with an apostrophy)

In front of both (s.m.) masculine nouns & (s.f.) feminine nouns

    Example: L’amico (s,m)

    L’ala (s,f)

Gli Arcoli Determinativi (The Definite Articles)used with singular nouns that we have studied so far are:

    IL

    LA

    L’

    Exercise:3

Complete the following nouns with Articoli Determinativi:

    porta

    sedia

    libro

    ora

    uscita

    tavolo

    orologio

Il VERBO ESSERE / THE VERB TO BE

    ESSERE                        TO BE

    IO      SONO                    I            AM

    TU      SEI                      YOU      ARE

    LEI/LUI      È            HE/SHE   IS

    VOI      SIETE                  YOU        ARE

    LORO      SONO                THEY        ARE

In Italian language to form a sentence we need these elements:

    Lui è americano

    Lei è italiana
