About this ebook

COWBOY ROMANCE

His Ebony Obsession

A Modern Cowboy Western Romance

Kiara Jackson couldn't stand the hustle and bustle of New York City. She'd worked as a waitress for too long while getting her psychology degree, and she had to get out.

After a few months of research, she found the perfect place—a sleepy little town in Montana called Wilsall, with only just over 200 residents. She figured it'd be the perfect spot to settle down and find a nice husband.

One day, a well-known pale man about town named Johnny entered the restaurant. He wasn't seen around too often, so any time the rumble of his motorcycle was heard, the residents knew he was coming.

He was a modern day cowboy, the bike his steed. He owned a sprawling multi-million dollar ranch just outside of Wilsall, which had for a few years, but no one knew much else about him.

Kiara and Johnny were inextricably drawn to each other from the moment they laid eyes on one another.

When his secret is discovered, will Kiara see Johnny the same way?

When they find themselves in Johnny's bedroom, will she give him what he's always wanted?

    HIS EBONY OBSESSION

    COWBOY ROMANCE

    BY GRACE HEARTSONG

    HIS EBONY OBSESSION

    CHAPTER ONE

Kiara Jackson stared out of the window of the bus she’d been riding for what seemed like forever.  Her stark white nails contrasted against her ebony skin, as did the multi-colored bands she wore at each finger.  Despite the long ride from her last stop-over to her destination, she wasn’t bored or upset.  There was a silent sort of buzzing excitement in the air for her.  Everyone else seemed to be headed home—and, she supposed, so was she.  Some seemed dejected, likely from some failure in the big city.

For months, Kiara had been planning her escape from the hustle and bustle of the crowded, dusty, polluted, elbow to elbow creep of New York.  She’d lived there all her life, and always took for truth that it was simply the way life was.  People were pushy, rude, obnoxious, self-concerned.  When she graduated college and realized that it wasn’t the life she wanted for herself, she resolved to move somewhere more authentic.  Somewhere with a slower pace, nicer people, literal greener pastures.  She’d chosen Montana for that purpose, because nothing could have possibly been further from the culture of New York City.

She’d made a few stops on the way, and the further she got from her home, the friendlier people seemed to be.  At a diner in Nashville she was welcomed and tended to like an old friend.  While her degree was in psychology, during her senior year she’d been seriously rethinking her life choices.  It was a complicated field to get into, and the work was more taxing than she initially thought.  Not only that, she’d have to deal with the myriad problems of people set upon by the cold cruelty of the concrete jungle, whether real or imagined.

By the time she graduated, she felt hopeless and afraid, because she couldn’t imagine staying in her chosen field—at least, not in her city.  When she began to seriously consider moving to a quiet place, Montana seemed to be the one for her.  She researched and spoke to people who lived there, eventually finding a particular small town that seemed to call out to her.  There were houses for rent and sale there, and only a few thousand lived within its bounds.

She’d packed quickly, and having made few friends in her time at school, she felt little about leaving everything behind to find her way.  Her parents understood, and wished her the best, knowing that she’d never been cut out for city life.  She was always skittish, scared by large crowds, always felt pressed in upon by the great skyscrapers that towered over everything.

As the bus came rumbling to a halt, Kiara stepped out, her tight curls bobbing and bouncing as she descended the stairs of the idling bus.  The sun had gone down just before their arrival, and while this would have caused her no small amount of anxiety back in New York, everything only seemed more serene for it here.  The chirp of crickets, the hum of locusts, and the rumbling bus were the only sounds for miles around, it seemed.  She was still in the hub city for the area, but the difference was striking and sudden.  Kiara found herself smiling hard, wide earnest for the first time in a long time.

City life had gotten her down in a big way in the few months prior to her move.  As it approached, the awfulness of city living only became more and more apparent, now that she had something to compare it to.  Even standing there holding her bag, she was stricken with how badly she’d lived up to that point—at least, badly for a woman like her.  Even remembering this, she felt glad, because it was never going to be that way for her again.

As she rolled her bag over to the front of the terminal, she took out her phone compulsively.  A habit she’d picked up, always trying to stay distracted and unattached to the chaotic, unreasonable world she found herself in.  When she realized as much, she gave a soft smile and turned it off, dropping it into the bag.  She leaned against the brick wall of the terminal, staring off over the wide expanse laid out before her.  She could see farms and ranches dotting the landscape in the distance, even in a hub city like this one.  The terminal was situated near the city limits, and she’d be settling in some 50 miles out of town.

The taxi drivers in the city knew the bus schedule by now, and made a point to be parked outside the terminal if they didn’t have any fares at the time.  Kiara made a point to take in the sights before heading over to one, simply opening the door and sliding her bag into the seat, following it soon.

Kiara spoke in a smooth, soft voice.  Wilsall, please.

The driver turned to her, his brow raised.  That’s a ways out.  Ain’t much out there, either.  You sure about that?

She nodded, and with a shrug, they were off.  They’d only driven minutes before they were well and truly out of the small city.

Kiara had never seen true country night before, and the inky darkness of it was almost unnerving.  Aside from what was illuminated by the beams of the headlights, the moon was the only thing casting a soft glow over the varied landscape.  She found herself a bit anxious, remembering what sorts of creatures could be lurking mere feet into the desert.  Being a city girl, she’d never encountered anything in the wild, let alone any sort of snake or coyote.  She knew that she’d have to get used to the fauna soon enough, and was oddly looking forward to hearing the song-dog’s howling and yipping through the night.

She rolled the window down then, feeling the cool night breeze on her skin.  This, at least, was the same everywhere, even if was
