Point and Shoot - Eve Craig

    Chapter One

Robin Conrad took a deep sigh when she saw the small group of people heading toward the front door of her studio. It had already been a busy morning, she had a client set to come by in less than half an hour, and she simply didn’t have time to deal with her sister .

Girls! You better stop fighting! I’ve heard about enough out of you two! Lauren said as she came in the front door, scowling at her daughters. She looked up at Robin. We’ve been out shopping today, and they just won’t quit. I swear, every time I turn around they come up with something else nasty to say to each other.

Robin shrugged and stepped back from the front wall of the studio, where she had just hung a framed photo. She asked every client for permission to use their photos in her advertising or to display in her studio. Sometimes they said no, which was fine, but they often changed their minds after they saw their pictures. It’s not a surprise. You and I used to fight like cats and dogs. Or maybe worse.

Lauren shook her head of bouncy hair emphatically. No. It couldn’t have been like this. They’re so hateful.

So, what brings you by? Robin smoothed down her straight, dark hair and put away the stepladder. I haven’t heard from you in a while.

Oh, you know. Things have been so busy. Travis is constantly at the restaurant, and my work seems to think I’m the most important person in existence. I’m thrilled, of course, but it does get a little old. We finally decided to take a day and do some shopping. The girls keep growing, and they need more summer clothes.

Did you do this, Aunty Robin? asked Isabella, the youngest of the girls. With her pale blonde hair and bright blue eyes, she looked just like her father. She pointed to a photo of a young couple with their dog.

Of course she did, stupid, retorted Anne. At age eleven, she already thought she knew everything. The girls could both be sweet when they wanted to be, but Robin knew all about sibling rivalry.

I did. That was actually their engagement picture. Robin came over to look at the photo once again herself. It had been a fun photo shoot out near the creek.

What does that mean? Isabella tilted her head to the side.

It means they’re getting married, snapped Lauren, and they’re probably the kind of people who are going to have the stupid dog in the wedding. She grabbed Robin’s arm and pulled her slightly away from the girls. I was going to come by here today to see if you have time to watch the girls tomorrow. I’ve been sending them to that daycare south of town over the summer. It’s cheaper than having a sitter come to the house and be with them in the evenings while I’m still at work, but they get so bored! It’s mostly little kids there, you know. I thought you could take them out to the water park or something.

Robin did her best to keep the wrinkles of frustration out of her forehead that she knew were trying to form. Lauren had still not accepted that Robin’s photography studio was a real job with real clients and real money. "I would love
