    Mirror Earth Network - P.Z. Walker

    Chapter 1

    Elisabeth stared at the door that had just slammed shut. Nol had walked out and he'd been very angry. They had screamed at each other which was entirely wrong. Part of her wanted to run after him and beg him to come back, but another part, her common sense, told her it was better to let him go and be happy. She'd be happier that way also.

    Nol had brought up the idea of bringing another woman into their house, into their lives. He'd met her on a trip to another community and he'd fallen for her like a rock. Elisabeth however wasn't ready for such a way of life and had tried to talk him out of it. Several times even. Each time the discussion had grown more heated and this time it had burnt out. And now Nol was gone, off to that other woman.

    Elisabeth looked around in her house. She wanted to throw something, break something, but the lifestyle here didn't present her with much. Aarghhh... she complained and walked out the front door that had been abused only moments before. Intentionally not looking up Elisabeth walked around the house and dropped herself on one of the two sunbeds and let the early sunlight warm her up. She imagined that it would boil away her anger.

    Is it safe to sit and talk? One of her neighbours had come over. You had a big fight with Nol. He looked angry.

    I'm sorry for the noise, Elisabeth said. Really, I am.

    The man nodded and sat down on the other sunbed. Sometimes these things happen. I don't need to know what happened but I hope you feel free now.

    Not yet, Elisabeth confessed, but over time I will.

    The neighbour patted her shoulder and told her everything would be fine. It's like the land we uproot before sowing new seeds for food. It needs time to find its peace again, and smart farmers know these things. You'll be fine. You have friends here, Elisabeth.

    The gentle touch of the man's hand on her bare shoulder felt like medicine. Thank you. I really feel lucky having you next door, Gregor. How is Sandreen?

    Sandreen was Gregor's wife and advanced in her pregnancy. She didn't come out very often these days. Gregor said his wife was doing well as long as she stayed off her feet. It won't be long now. The doctor is coming over every day to keep an eye on Sandreen and our child. Gregor was excited and a bit worried because this would be their first.

    If I can help in any way, just let me know, said Elisabeth. Gregor nodded as he got up. He wanted to go back to Sandreen, which was understandable.

    Silence returned, not only to the back yard of her house but also to her head. This short talk with Gregor had done her a lot of good. She decided to stay here for a while longer and then head out to the communal dining area.

    ~~~
    The next day Elisabeth left for work early. There was no reason to linger at home longer. As she walked along she had to bite her tongue a few times to prevent tears from appearing. Part of her missed Nol a lot after all the time they'd lived together. People here were so much easier going with things like this, she'd have to adjust and do so quickly. As she walked along, Cobyo joined her. The man was hard to miss today as he'd painted himself completely red save his hair. That was gold.
    I detect frowns, he said, looking at her face. My frown detector is famous around here, you should know, and I get alerted for the most serious cases. His words made her laugh. That is much better, Elisabeth. Remember that I am always available to talk to if you need someone to talk to about things you don't want to talk about.
    What? His avalanche of words confused her for a moment. Only then she understood what he'd said. Oh, right. Yes, of course. I'll know where to find you.
    That is good. And you are not walking in the right direction.
    I'm going to work so I am.
    You cannot go to work without eating, Cobyo lectured as he took her by the arm and steered her towards the communal dining area. That was where she didn't want to go because the risk of seeing Nol there was too big. Elisabeth however also didn't want to offend Cobyo who was always so kind to her (and everyone) so she decided to go with him for a quick bite.
    The bite wasn't quick. Nol wasn't there but Gloria and Henrik were, so Elisabeth and Cobyo sat with them and talked about the progress of their amazing transport system, as usual. All but one of the thirteen communities now had a fully functional portal to move through. For now they still needed a few people trained as technicians to set up the destinations for everyone, because the speech recognition modules still were being grown to perfection. The latest test model was always in the lab where Elisabeth worked and it was amazing to find that each new release was working better than the previous one.
    Elisabeth told her friends how she and Nol had split up. They nodded and told her that it was probably for the best. Think of the good times you spent together, said Cobyo. Those count. Once there is no more common ground, or not enough of it, it's best to step away from each other. Nol should have known better than to drag this out for so long with you because he knows this. He's lived here all his life.
    But it's probably also my fault, said Elisabeth. I should have remembered.
    Cobyo looked at her. Don't think that. You have learnt so much already. You've become a very appreciated member of our society. Nol also knows that. I suspect that he tried to stay with you as long as possible so he could share your fame.
    Fame? That came as a surprise for Elisabeth.
    Together with Gloria you built the travel-portals. You two are the minds behind them. Cobyo nodded at his own words.
    Gloria shook her head. We weren't the only ones who did that, Cobyo. So many others helped with that.
    Cobyo took Elisabeth's hand. But this woman came from that other side, adjusted to our way of life in a wonderful way and helped you perfect the system. That counts.
    Wait a moment, said Elisabeth. Are you coming on to me?
    Everyone laughed at her remark. Gloria said she didn't share Cobyo's view on things but Henrik then surprised them by saying that he'd heard similar things from people.
    Okay, guys, enough is enough, okay? I'm here, I'm me and that's that. Elisabeth felt a bit shy after such praise; she wasn't used to it and didn't want to get used to it.
    Let's eat up then. We have a new speech recognition module to pick up and test. Gloria put her empty plate on the ground and looked at Elisabeth as if she wanted her to hurry.
    The module had been designed and grown in the facility where Roger still worked. He was doing well there, Elisabeth knew. She visited him and Yalda occasionally. Today she'd see him again. Excitement almost got the better of her as they switched on their machinery. They'd travel to the other community using their own portal system. It had proven to be very safe so they didn't bother with the pods any longer.
    We could leave this up and running, Elisabeth said.
    But we won't. I don't want people from anywhere showing up inside our laboratory suddenly. Certainly not when we're working on something complicated. Gloria grinned at her colleague and winked. Can you warn them we're coming over? The systems they had installed for the public had a safety built in that would check if the receiving end was free. Their own portal didn't have that as they were still working on perfecting it.
    Elisabeth made the call and heard that there was quite a lot of traffic through the portal at the other end. They waited until the technician there said he had disabled the automatic system. Gloria touched a panel. Their portal activated and they stepped through. It was still a surprising feeling for Elisabeth, despite having done this before. One moment she was at home, the next she was hundreds of miles away. And this wasn't even to another earth.
    They quickly walked to the moving walkway. Elisabeth always enjoyed travelling this way. Gloria knew that; she'd seen Elisabeth's face light up often enough. "You can fly if you want, Gloria said. It makes you look so happy."
    Elisabeth grinned as she turned to the wind and held out her arms. The feeling never failed to come. She closed her eyes to make the experience even better. During the first times she hadn't dared to do that. Falling was too easy. Her balance had improved though, so this was the best way for her now. She felt the air rush over her body, her hair whipping behind her.
    You look stunning, Gloria said. I'm almost tempted to try this myself someday.
    Why don't you? I'll hold your hand if you want to.
    In the end Gloria didn't participate in the game. Elisabeth promised she would keep inviting Gloria.
    The two left the pathway on the spot closest to the greenhouse labs and walked into the building where their components were being developed and grown.
    Out of habit Elisabeth looked around to see if Roger was there. He hardly ever was. These devices were still too intricate and complicated for him, although he was making good progress in that line of work.
    I've been waiting for you. One of the people in the laboratory walked up to them. Your new module is ready. I thought you would like to see it being harvested.
    Elisabeth grinned. That sounded so weird, harvested. They followed the man to the container where the module had grown. They knew the box by now, having visited it so often already. He switched the monitoring panel off and opened the lid. After that he lifted the module, no bigger than two fists, out. The long, blue stem that had fed it was carefully cut off. Someone who was standing by took that stem and sealed it with a kind of gel. That way the end wouldn't dry out and it could be used to grow something else.
    Elisabeth was the lucky recipient of the new module. She marvelled at how simple this looked and how complex the design for this has to be. The technology of this Earth was even more beyond her comprehension than that of her old world.
    Will you be fine taking this with you?
    Gloria assured the man they wouldn't have any problems.
    The module still dripped a bit of fluid. Is that a problem? Elisabeth pointed at another drop that fell down. This was the first time she was here to pick up a part of their equipment.
    The man assured her that was normal. It will dry out and fall off in a short while. As soon as that happens you can replace it with the existing one in your system.
    Great, that's easy. Even I can do that, Elisabeth said and grinned. As they were about to leave, another thought hit her. Is that fluid dangerous? She wanted to make sure it wouldn't be a problem if she got any on her skin.
    It's plant-based, Elisabeth. You could even eat it without ill effect. Gloria patted her on the shoulder. It's safe.
    Elisabeth looked at the unit in her hand. Eat this? I don't think so. She loved eating but only things that looked like food, not like a handful of electronics. Her expression made the others laugh. That happened often enough; she didn't worry about that any more.
    Come, we'll go back and see if this one works. They thanked the helpful laboratory-man and went outside again.
    The sunlight hit Elisabeth's skin and made her shiver with delight. After all the time she'd lived here already, this sensation would never feel normal. Gloria had noticed Elisabeth's reaction to this so often that she had stopped making comments about it.
    At their leisure they walked over to the start of the moving walkway and got onto the slowest track. I love it here, Elisabeth said.
    I know. And I understand. Gloria still remembered her own visit to Elisabeth's world quite vividly. Such a strange world where almost no people wanted to live without coverings. Even worse: those who wanted to lead a normal life were often shunned because of that! Are you in a hurry to go back? Otherwise we'll stay on the slow track and enjoy the journey.
    Oh, let's do that then. It's so nice to look around here. She loved the community where she lived but there was far less vegetation there. Once in a while she longed to see all the trees and the grass. In the distance she heard muffled cries from the animals that stayed away from the houses in the daylight.
    Did you ever go out into the jungle with Roger and Yalda? Gloria recalled how her friend had mentioned such an invitation.
    No. I'm not adventurous enough for that. Seeing the forest from here and hearing the beasts when they're there is good enough for me. Elisabeth shifted the module from one hand to the other. This is the plant life I'm interested in.
    The raw cry they heard from behind them was a warning that came too late.
    Gloria screamed as she was hit by something. The woman tumbled from the walkway. Elisabeth was also hit and fell over, bouncing onto the faster track of the walkway. That cost her some skin. The speech recognition module flew from her hand as she rolled back onto the slower track. From the corner of her eye she saw a leatherbird fly up into the sky. Then the world faded.
    Chapter 2
    This is crazy stuff. The technician stared at his monitor. The display showed long strings of information. Most of it didn't even made sense. He took his phone and called his manager. Dan, you gotta come over here. It's about that funky tablet. It didn't take Dan long to arrive.
    What's that? Dan traced a finger along the bits that looked like nothing he'd ever seen before. Are there even ASCII codes for that stuff?
    Beats me, Dan. I'm surprised that shit doesn't break the system.
    Make a core dump before it happens. Dan walked towards the door. "The boss needs to know about this.
    Dan marched straight to Professor Holger's office and didn't bother to knock. Professor. We decoded most of the thing.
    Professor Holger broke off his phone call mid-sentence. Show me. The man got up and followed the technical director to the cubicle where Frank, the technician, had shown him the stream of data from the strange tablet.
    It had taken them weeks to unload the data from the device. They'd kept it in a freezer to prevent it from withering further. Getting it out to reverse engineer it had in the end worked but that had also meant the end of the device. Luckily they had lots of pictures and video footage of handling the alien device.
    Frank.
    The technician looked up.
    Show the professor what you got.
    Frank nodded and pulled up the information on his screen.
    Is this all secured? Professor Holger didn't want the entire world to know about this. His plans to visit that strange world and its dinosaurs hadn't changed much. The fact that some of his people had chosen to leave only meant a temporary setback.
    Everything's encrypted to standards, sir, said Frank who moved aside. The professor looked at the monitor. He mumbled the words as he read through them.
    What's all that? Holger pointed at the stream of garbage that was mixed with real text. He wasn't pleased to learn that nobody had been able to decipher it yet. Get to work on that. His eyes however started to shine when he read the words. Plain English words with lots of information on all kinds of equipment he'd never heard of. Holger knew he wanted that equipment. Send all that to my office. Get a team on decoding that mess. Make them work nights and weekends if necessary.
    The technical manager nodded. The boss always got what he wanted.
    ~~~

    So you think you can recreate that? Professor Holger looked at Dan. The technical manager had been going over the mostly decoded material with him for several hours.

    We should, yes. Some things mentioned here can take a while but with some time and funding we can pull off anything, sir.

    Holger understood that. The items Dan was referring to were new to him as well. Some things were so obscure that they'd have to make educated guesses and try them. It's all connected to the portal system. I want that up and running again. And safe for the people who operate it. The last run had damaged a lot of equipment and killed four operators. Holger didn't care so much about the people themselves but it was damned hard to find good replacements. Being careful with them was therefore a priority.

    We'll get to it immediately. Dan got up and walked out of the office. The professor was usually an okay kind of guy to Dan but at times he was very pushy. Dan didn't deal with pushy people very well.

    The technical manager assembled a team of engineers and detailed the plan he'd drawn up. The men and women looked at his designs and told him he was nuts. It would never work. Dan told them to try it anyway.

    You're serious, aren't you? One of the engineers shook his head. "There are mentions of plants in there. We're tech people, not botanists."

    Good thinking. I'll find a botanist to join you. His words were met with laughter. Two days later the team had a botanist.

    I'm not certain what I can do for you, the elderly man said as he was introduced. I know about plants and flowers. This isn't my kind of environment. The amount of machinery in the lab seemed to worry him.

    The technical manager assured him he would be in his place before too long. He looked at the other team members who weren't laughing now. Can you explain to Mr Burns what we've discovered? And keep it as non-technical as you're able to.

    Do call me Bill, said the botanist. Mr Burns makes me feel old.

    A round of grins went over faces. Then they started to explain what they had discovered. They had prepared a few slides to show the botanist who was still hesitant at first. The more they told him about the apparent connection of the plant-based tablet to the strange sequence of symbols, the more interested he became. After listening to them and asking a lot of questions he looked at the technical manager of the team. Dan, I understand that this is amazing but... is this real? Are you trying to make a joke on my account? This simply isn't possible.

    Someone rolled back through the slides and showed him the pictures of the tablet again. This is as real as the screen you're watching, Bill. William frowned at that shortening of his name. We all saw it and I held it in my own hands. The technician raised his hands as if that made his claim the honest truth.

    Bill nodded. You said there was something odd about what you saw. Can I see that specific information?

    The tech looked at Dan. That's classified. Is he cleared? Dan assured him that Bill was cleared all the way. The tech pulled up a few images of the sequences they hadn't been able to decode. Here ya go, Bill.

    In silence the man looked at the monitor for a while. This means not much to me either, he then admitted, but that doesn't mean it means nothing. I'll need to look up a few things. I'm convinced I've seen a few things that resemble this but I can't remember where, nor what it was.

    The technicians in the room gave Bill looks. They weren't ordinary looks. You mean you can figure this out? That disturbed them. They were among the best in their trade and they couldn't make sense of the data.

    I'm not saying that, Bill replied, being careful. I do think I can find a few bits and pieces that might help you further though.

    Dan, the technical manager, grinned. His hunch to bring the botanist in was already paying off, if only in pocket money.

    Chapter 3

    Awareness came back to Elisabeth and it brought a lot of pain that came from everywhere at the same time. Not even fully awake she groaned at the discomfort.

    Elisabeth. Can you hear me?

    The voice was close to her ear. Yes. That's good, right? Hearing voices, pain and being able to speak meant she wasn't dead yet. What happened? Elisabeth tried to open her eyes. After a few attempts she succeeded. She was inside and a strange woman's face looked down at her.

    Some people found you and Gloria next to the walkway. You were both hurt badly. We came and brought you here to treat you. How are you feeling?

    Elisabeth groaned again. "Is like shit enough or do you want the truth?"

    I thought so, and you're the lucky one. The woman got up. My name's Derren.

    Elisabeth noticed she had only one breast, and not only that but it looked wrong, as if half of it was gone. And how could she be the lucky one? How's Gloria? Elisabeth tried not to stare at the woman's partial breast, while she wondered what had happened to Derren.

    Still out and that's good. That didn't sound good at all.

    She asked again what had happened while the woman, Derren, was walking around, picking up things from several places.

    The people who found you saw a leatherbird fly off a bit earlier. We think it attacked you. It looks like you got clawed in the back and slapped by a wing.

    And Gloria? Why didn't she talk about Gloria?

    I'm really sad to say she got the worst. I think the bird pierced her shoulder with its beak. Her left arm...

    Cold sweat suddenly covered Elisabeth's entire naked body. Is disabled? She couldn't bear to think of what had happened.

    Derren sat down with her again. No. Worse. It's gone.

    No... Elisabeth closed her eyes. Gloria needed both her arms for a lot of the work they were doing. That can't be.

    Sorry. You asked. We found her arm but there's no way we can put it back on her shoulder. She'll have to adjust.

    It didn't happen often but this was one of the moments where Elisabeth hoped she'd faint. Of course she didn't. Tears rolled over her cheeks as she thought about her friend who now had to miss an arm. It was so unfair. Why didn't those leatherbirds stay in their own area? They were the only ones causing a lot of trouble.

    Can you sit up? Derren helped Elisabeth who went through a lot of pain before she was upright. Your back is healing well. I'm going to put something on it.

    Where is Gloria? Elisabeth learnt that her colleague was at Yalda's house. That also told her at which community they were: back where they'd just left.

    Yalda's house is closer to the doctor, Derren explained. She'll see more of him than she likes once she's allowed to wake up. Before Elisabeth could ask what allowed to wake up meant, Derren told her that her friend Sarah had been at the house a few times, asking how Elisabeth was doing. If you feel up for it you can go outside and sit in the open air for a while. I can have someone call Sarah if you want.

    Sarah. Elisabeth felt good to hear that name. Sarah'd been a good friend back in her other life but she'd become a great friend here. She and Nol had paid Sarah several visits to make her feel at home a bit more. The thought of Nol filled Elisabeth with anger and sorrow for a moment but she pushed those feelings away. That would be nice.

    Derren assisted Elisabeth in getting up and getting settled in the garden. Her back felt like it was sown up tightly. She dreaded to find out how it looked and what had actually happened. Clawed could mean so much. I'll get you something to drink. Try not to move too much.

    After all that Derren left Elisabeth alone with her thoughts and the promise that Sarah would be along soon. The scientist was still trying to puzzle together what had happened when Sarah joined her in the small garden.

    You're up! It's so good to see you like this. Sarah sat down and remembered Derren's warning. 'No hugging.'

    Sarah. Elisabeth smiled and took her friend's hands. I'm glad to see you. Do you know what happened?

    Sarah could only tell her what she'd
