About this ebook

A novella of love, magic, and a touch of coffee.

I own a coffee shop, and it's anything but normal. Magical and non-magical live in harmony, and I'm happy to serve them all the drinks I put my extra-special twist on. But watching Nathan, my ex-fiancé, sip lattés and ogle his new woman suppresses my seer emotions and puts a damper on my own love life.

Until Cane sweeps me off my feet and dizzies me with kisses even as he asks me to perform a Wiccan vision quest for Nathan and his fiancé. I have a choice to make: get over getting dumped and the stinging resentment in my heart, or risk losing Cane and another chance at love.

This novella was originally published in the Anthology Love Through Heartache and kick-started the series Magic and Heartache about love set in a contemporary fantasy world—currently filled with coffee. Unrequited Love has since been re-edited and partially revised to include more content than the original version.

A huge thank you to the editors at Metamorphosis Editing Services as well as my cover artist Dar, at Wicked Smart Designs, for helping to make this possible.

As for personal thanks, the list could go on for pages, but for this novel, I’d like to thank my beta readers—including Samantha, fellow writers Emelie Larsson and Wendy Lynn Clark, and my awesome sister!

    Chapter One

I pulled down hard on the dark wooden handle as steam and the rich scent of brewing coffee hit me in the face, briefly distracting me from my waiting customers—particularly my ex standing on the other side of the counter.

Nathan frowned, body a rigid line of irritation. I wasn’t expecting you here, Jorden.

Confused, I glanced around the magic-infused coffee shop I owned—The Top Off—and noted the smattering of small mahogany tables and brightly colored oversized cushioned chairs by the large bay windows were filled with customers. The view was normal for a Friday.

I turned my attention back to Nathan’s hazel eyes and carefully coiffed golden-brown hair. What are you talking about?

He leaned against my counter, his well-dressed body one I knew intimately. His expression was concerned enough that I wanted to punch it right off his face, but I held back. I didn’t want to scare off my customers.

Nathan tugged at his ear. We used to date.

I clenched my teeth, unable to believe I wasted over a year of my life on him. "We were engaged."

He swung his arm out, almost hitting my silver-haired pixie friend and business partner Perri as she returned from dropping off a charmed drink. Perri’s glare didn’t faze him. You need to stop stalking me and Tiffany, he said. You’re always following us, showing up where we are. We see you all the time.

I laughed—I couldn’t help it. You have coffee in my shop every day! Of course you see me everywhere.

Nathan glared as he crossed his arms. You were at the grocery store last week and the mall before then.

I shook my head in disbelief. What do you expect me to do, go to the next town over?

I spied Cane, one of my surlier horned customers entering the shop, and tried to end the conversation before he got close and caused a scene like he always did when Nathan bothered me. "And if you’re tired of seeing me, I suggest you stop coming to my coffee shop and move out of the county I live in. Now back to my original question, I said, holding a metal carafe. What type of cream did you want in your Americano?"

Grumbling next to me, Perri finished making the latté Cane had ordered and slammed the cup on the counter. The heightened tingle of magic brushed against my senses. She waited until Nathan was headed toward his new fiancé, a gorgeous, purple haired Nymph, and out of earshot before saying, Why do they continue to come here? It’s not like there aren’t other coffee shops.

Humorlessly, I handed off the next order. We’re still the closest one to their work.

I didn’t know what I’d done to deserve seeing my ex and Tiffany at The Top Off every day, but I was sure it had something to do with Tiffany herself. Any drastic change to their surroundings and Nymphs’ instability issues would cause massive social problems for the neighborhood. Her purple hair flashed, drawing my attention as she leaned forward and placed her hand on Nathan’s thigh. The ache in my heart spread as Nathan closed the distance between them and kissed her.

I keep waiting for you to be a typical Volur and lay into him.

I frowned, not happy with the fact that my best friend wanted me to go medieval on my ex. Please, not you, too. I get enough of that from Cane.

Turning away from the embracing couple, I still didn’t understand why Nathan continued to come here. As a human, he wasn’t bound to people or places like Nymphs were, and Tiffany would follow him anywhere. Knowing him, he probably thought it didn’t bother me at all.

Just because I’d been the one to make our specialty Valentine’s Day drink for Tiffany six months ago—one that enabled the drinker a clarity of the heart without manipulating emotions and was meant to provide that little extra feeling on that magic day of love—didn’t mean I’d known she was going to give it to Nathan. When she ordered it, I thought she had a boyfriend she wanted to gift it to or sip it herself. Perhaps the gods enjoyed my suffering, as Cane joked on more than one occasion when he hassled me during my down time.

That terrible day, Perri’s chuckle had died abruptly as Tiffany approached Nathan’s table with the cup and placed the drink in front
