About this ebook

What happens when God leads you out of what is safe with a promise, but you find yourself wondering in the wilderness (a desolate and dry place that looks nothing like what was promised)?

I have learned that there are many lifeless layers within us and whether we know it or not, every experience we go through is there to remove each layer and get us closer and closer to the person we were meant to be. We need to remove all that is artificial, all that is learned and all that has fought and gained lordship over our lives.

This is an account of a season in my life that saw some lifeless layers being removed, exposing something more beautiful than I ever imagined.

I hope that as you look into my layers, you will see your own and ultimately experience the beauty coming out of your wilderness.

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to Bulelwa Jafta, the woman whose commitment pushed me to see this project to the end. Sis Bulelwa, I don’t think you know how incredible you are and maybe the fact that you don’t know is what makes your life beautiful to watch. You are an inspiration to me in many ways and I love you dearly. Thank you for being a safe haven and my calming antidote at one of the lows in my life. You have no idea!

    Acknowledgements

To God, thank you for revealing Your son to me. Jesus Christ, thank you for Your amazing grace. I now know what You meant when You said, my grace is sufficient for you, 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV), for I have experienced Your grace carrying me through in more ways than one. Holy Spirit, the best helper I could ever have! For doing life with me, I can never thank You enough. I simply cannot do without You.

To my friend, Andisa Jafta, thank you for keeping me company during those lazy nights and for reminding me to push even when I felt uninspired. Your anticipation for this book was motivation for me. I will write another one just so that we can do it again. It’s been great.

To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you so much. Your part may seem small, but it is so great that, without it, this book wouldn’t exist. Nizizithandwa.

Last, but definitely not least, to you, my reader. I hope that after reading this book there will be room in your heart for you to always be honest in life, because, if there is, this was all worth it.

    The Fun Break

Quitting my job in the television industry never crossed my mind. My plan was to climb the ladder right up to the top. I taught myself the game through observing the greatest and through self-help books. I was committed to the art and knew it was bound to pay off in the end, somehow.

I started right at the bottom as a personal assistant to the GM – a post, I must add, I don’t remember applying for. I know I did apply, because they had my CV and I did not have anyone else assisting me with applications. Let’s face it, though, after a gazillion applications, you just can’t keep track anymore. You do it in the same way you would have popcorn while watching a good movie.

I wanted to work for the company for the longest time and therefore when I got the invitation for the interview, I didn’t even bother to ask what position it was for. I thought it would be awkward to ask. It would be like when you speak to someone for a long time without asking their name. Asking their name then somehow feels wrong, so you do what feels right and you just wing it. You just go with the flow. That was me in the interview.

Fortunately, even though I wanted the job, I wasn’t that desperate because I had just got a job in radio – the job that had launched me into the media industry. I decided to go for the interview, but to go there to have fun. I was on a roll until the HR Manager stopped me in my tracks asking, Did you apply for this job? Before I could answer, another lady on the panel interjected with, Of course she did. How else would we have her CV?! At that point, she passed me the job specifications. She gave me a few minutes to browse through them and the game continued. I really had no care in the world and I enjoyed the interview. So, for me, that in its own was mission accomplished.

When I got the call to inform me that I had got the job, I knew nothing could stand in the way if God has set out something for you. When I reported for duty on my first day, I learnt that the lady who had spoken up for me during the interview was in fact my boss. That was the beginning of my journey in the television industry.

    The Climb

From the beginning I knew that being a PA was just a way to get my foot in the door. It was my ear on the ground, so to speak. I was to use that time to learn and to see where I wanted to move to from there. I was not wired to be a PA and I knew it. That did not stop me from giving my best and I was determined not to fail at being one.

I was blessed to have a great boss – I hear that doesn’t happen every day. She was the best thing to happen to my career at the time, even though we were very different. I am Christian, she is Muslim. I am black, she is coloured. I spoke my mind while she had the wisdom to sift before speaking – something I admired about her. While she spoke to you, you could tell that she sifted through her words with each pause she took before speaking. Both of us had great respect for each other and this made up for all the differences.

When I started as her PA, she said, "Before God we are equal even though I
