    Chapter 1

The fear inside Gerry McLaren was unexplainable as he sat in the G45 security van along with seven other recently sentenced men, all on their way to Edinburgh prison. When he left home this morning to face a charge of non-payment of a fine for urinating in public, he never imagined that he would not be going home for the next thirty days. He cautiously looked around at the other prisoners and saw a mixture of frightened, hardened and carefree individuals. People from all walks of life. He didn’t belong here.

Yesterday, a police officer visited his home with a warrant for his arrest. He had genuinely forgotten to pay the fine after pleading guilty a couple of months ago to the charge of urinating on a police vehicle in the city centre after a raucous night out with a few mates. They were celebrating a rare win for the Scottish national football team against the auld enemy, England. The officer, who appeared to have had a recent personality bypass, escorted him to the waiting police van, sitting outside his house. He was taken to the local police station where he was refused bail and spent the night. In the morning he was driven to court along with another man who looked like he had just gone three rounds with a revolving door, or maybe a six-foot-two
