Introduction
The fact that you are seeking out information about setting up a non-profit organization goes a long way to show how selfless and committed you are to your community and environment. It is indeed laudable, and your interest in giving back is what inspired me into writing this book. The best thing about setting up a 501 (c) (3), is its hitch-free process, so many individuals encounter challenges with application, approval, setting up a board and even sustaining the organization after the tedious process of getting it together. Due to this laborious strain, they lose their enthusiasm and ultimately get discouraged; I make bold to say that if you take this book and its content to heart, you won't encounter such problems.
There is only one thing I require of you as we flag off this venture and it is your determination; with a determined mind, you can achieve whatever you set your mind to do. So we will talk about the ground work, which is the platform for the conception of your ideas and then discover how to prepare your application. You will get approval but it doesn’t end there, we have to look into the board of directors and more importantly how to set up your nonprofit in a way that it leaves a legacy for generations.
I know you’re getting so excited already and I am too, through this material, we will help make a difference in the lives of the people around you. A 501 (c) (3) is the best tool you can utilize in leaving your footprints on the sands of time. Okay, I’m beginning to turn this book into a motivational one, but I just can’t wait to start up the process with you. Ready? Let’s get our hands dirty and begin with the groundwork.
Chapter One:
Ten Steps to set up your 501(c) (3)
The first thing to do after deciding on setting up a nonprofit organization is to plan. Most individuals miss this steps as such when they encounter challenges they get so overwhelmed because they do not have a plan. So you have to plan; you need to create your organization first in your mind, visualize it before taking on the governmental processes. I like to refer to this first stage as the analysis stage,
it is the stage you have to do by yourself. You are the custodian of the vision; you know what you want so, get in a quiet place with your writing pad, maybe a board and analyze the whole process, with this book by your side of course. Below are the ten most important steps you can take in setting up your nonprofit organization.
1. Ask Vital Questions
Now you’re in a quiet place, ask yourself these critical questions and be honest with your answers; why are you setting up a 501 (c) (3)? What social problem are you solving? Who are the beneficiaries? Is it something new? Will you find fulfillment with it? What about income stream? How do you intend to generate revenue for the project? Will you have paid staff members? Volunteers? Are you getting the whole community involved? Don’t fret over the number of questions; I just want to help you create a direction for your passion.
2. Planning
It isn’t enough that you have a dream, you need to empower your dream with a plan. The question about income stream is so important, no one is going to pay you a monthly stipend rather, you will be rendering service and those services require money, so it’s a lot of work. If you ignore all of these aspects before going to the IRS (Internal Revenue Service), you will get stuck even after you receive approval. The fact that 501(c) (3) is exempted from tax payments give you some leverage but you’ve got to build on that and planning gives you the heads-up.
3. Research
The importance of the investigation at this stage cannot be overemphasized, so after answering the questions posed above, you have to conduct proper research on your passion. It is possible that someone else is doing something similar maybe even the exact project you have in mind, so do real research, and if you want to collaborate with a bigger organization you will be able to make that decision while you carry out research. Research also helps you narrow down your scope, you may be thinking about a massive project that covers numerous areas, and this can make you lose focus on the most important thing. Remember you’re just starting out, you have to it one step at a time.
4. Business Plan
Next, you need to develop a business plan; despite the fact that a 501(c) (3) is a nonprofit organization doesn’t mean it isn’t a business, the only difference is in the fact that it isn’t profit driven. You need to handle financial reports that detail incoming and outgoing funds, so a business plan is most suitable. If you do not have a clue on how to create one you can seek advice from an expert who will gladly put you through. Your presentation for approval will be much more professional when you display thorough knowledge on every aspect of your work before any group they will be prone to render assistance. So
