A Family Journey Through Addiction - Patrecia Williams
Chapter 1:
What is an Addiction?
Have you ever heard about the word ‘addiction’? Do you know someone who easily loses their temper and destroy things in the house? Maybe an uncle who acts really strange and someone has to put him to bed all the time. Sometimes he might be slow in speech and you may have noticed that he drinks too much at family parties or every day. That's because he has an illness which could be treated medically. Addiction is a medical illness which makes people make wrong choices even if it hurts them. You don't have to worry because they can get well again with medical treatment.
Have you ever seen daddy sleeping too much or making so much noise? Maybe the noise scared you and when you try to talk to him, he pushed you aside. Or maybe you have seen mommy acting funny many times and sometimes she doesn’t remember that she was mean to you. How do you feel when that happens? I am sure you don’t feel too happy and you wish they wouldn’t do that again. Sometimes when you eat too much your tummy hurts but then you still feel like eating again. Right? Even if your brain keeps telling you to stop eating because your tummy hurts, you keep eating anyway. You know why you keep eating even when it hurts, it’s probably because you love that particular food so much. That is the same way it is with addiction. Addiction is when someone keeps doing something even when it hurts them and their families. Older people also have things they like so much that they cannot do without even if it causes them much trouble. Addiction is doing something you enjoy to the point that you cannot stop doing it. You become sad and angry when someone tries to stop you from doing it. People can be addicted to anything they love doing, some people are even addicted to eating. Someone could get addicted to movies or even sleep.
Addiction often makes people sick and do bad things. But just like I said before, they can get healed.
A dad who loves his kids will not hit them but if he becomes addicted to either drugs or alcohol he may start hitting them. Someone who has always been very quiet could become very loud and noisy if he drinks too much alcohol. So you see? Its’ the drugs or alcohol in their body that makes them act the way they do.
Imagine if you went to the movies on a school night when you ought to be in bed or doing your assignment. How about if you do that often and then you neglect your school work? Will your
