About this ebook

This book covers the basics from domain name registration and web site hosting - selecting a host and registrar, selecting a plan, price comparison. We will then go into installation of WordPress using your host's Control Panel or the WordPress copy/install instructions. You will see four free themes installed and illustrated before moving forward with the "spacious" theme.
We will demonstrate various plugins for:
search engine optimization
backups
maintenance mode
security
plus other functionality
You will even see specific setups and suggestion for some of these.
We will work on customization in two different forms - PHP screen design and coding for use directly in WordPress and a custom C# project focused on enhancement of eCommerce order tracking.
This Ebook, although it has a few beginner parts, is definitely focused on an intermediate to advanced WordPress designer. If you are a visual learner, you will greatly appreciate the large number of screenshots designed to guide and enhance the learning experience. From a programming/customization standpoint, you can type the complete code as displayed, or download and install.

I would like to give thanks to my God. Without Him, life would be unbearable. Thanks also to my wife who has supported me through the research and study time required to complete this book.

Thanks, also, to those who have been in my Publishing/Promoting classes. In trying to give back in the same proportion that I have received, it seems that just as much knowledge was gained, as was imparted, in these classes.

The opportunities to develop WordPress sites for my clients in order to promote their business interests are greatly appreciated. Along the way, I have received the knowledge and confidence to create this book. I wish you, the reader, a great adventure in your web site design/redesign efforts.

    Introducing Your Author

Stephen J. Link is a computer guy by profession, an author by hobby, and a Layman in the study of God’s Word. He has a computer support book entitled Link Em Up On Outlook that was published in 2004 as a paperback (renamed to Power Outlook in reprint). He also has over 125 articles covering various topics published on his own blog and independent sites. Various Books have been published covering a number of topics. As a programmer, he has a unique approach to help you master the ability to create the code to automate processes and add efficiency to your client's or employer's processes. Along this journey, you will have an opportunity to work with WordPress 4 and be able to add custom screens and processing using the PHP coding language.

As with all software, web sites and anything else you may develop, it is never totally complete. As you are working through the pages, or after finishing them, you are likely to see improvements that could have been made. That is the beauty of computer programming - the only limits are imposed by your imagination and amount of funding.

    About This Book

Some people consider web design to be a daunting task. I would definitely agree that it was quite tough to write HTML code in Notepad and wait to view the page using your browser. Those days are long gone, though. Many of today's development technologies allow a live preview of changes as they are in progress. WordPress and PHP do not deviate from these standards.

Since there are many features and functions which contribute to a fully capable web site, it can take an immense amount of time to manually create and import the various functions. WordPress uses a concept called plugins. Each plugin can add a single function to your site, or multiple related functions. The advantage gained from a single plugin completely depends on the vision of the plugin designer.

We will start with the process of registering a new domain name with your selected host and end with a complete, search-optimized, web site based on a WordPress theme. Along the way, we will make suggestions of plugins that you may want to add to your new site for incorporating social media, WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editing, viewing visitor statistics and many more features.

Throughout this book, we will take little side trips which will be noted by the Side Trip label. These do not have a direct link to the code and design, although they can provide a useful learning experience.

What's next? That would depend on your approach

Do you have an existing domain name already? If not, start with chapter 1.

Chapter 2 moves into two of the installation methods to allow usage of WordPress as your web site design platform.

Chapter 3 and following work through setting up various aspects of the site, gaining additional power through the use of plugins and deciding how, or if, you want to integrate a blog into your
