Summary of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Jennifer Jansen
Introduction
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.
– Aristotle.
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a best-selling book by Stephen R. Covey. It was published in 1988 as a business and self-help book, and to date has sold over 25 million copies. The book itself is just under 400 pages and if you do not have the time to read through it, I have written this summary to assist you. I’ve taken the most important points from the book and put them in easy to read terms.
The 7 Habits was originally written as a business management book. However, the concepts within it are universal and because of this, people realised they could use them in all areas of life to bring about more success and fulfilment.
In the 7 Habits, Covey discusses a particular approach to achieving one’s goals and doing so effectively by aligning oneself to true north
which is his version of saying ‘ethical character.’ He presents certain character ethics as being both universal as well as timeless.
Our characters are a composite of our habits. They tend to be consistent, and most of the time unconscious patterns. Either way, habits show our character, and also how effective or ineffective we are in life.
