Cost of Doing Business - Eve Craig
Chapter One
Robin’s footsteps echoed in the empty space of the old building. She took in the exposed brick walls, the beautiful old woodwork near the stairs, and the fireplace. You said it would be the same rent as my current place ?
It would,
agreed her landlord, Jason Belford. We could just continue the current lease that you have right now. Now new deposit, no raise in rent.
She nodded, trying to absorb it all. What’s the square footage? Is it any more than what I have now?
Jason pointed up the stairs to the open loft area. It’s about the same as what you currently have, it’s just split up a little because of the different floors. But it would be a great way for you to have different sets for your photography.
That’s true.
Robin put a finger to her lip, thinking. Do you mind if we explore it a little on our own?
No problem. I’m going to step outside and make a call.
He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and went out the solid oak front door.
What do you think?
Robin turned to Jake, unsure of what to do. When she had rented the old grocery store that currently held her studio, she hadn’t had any doubts. It was spacious and unique, even though it needed a little work. It’s really beautiful.
It is,
Jake agreed. He tipped his head back to examine the exposed wood ceilings. Did he say anything about the history of it? It looks like something the historical society would like to get their hands on.
I thought the same thing when he gave me the address and I drove by it the other day. But I checked with Megan, and she said it wasn’t anything they were interested in. It’s not quite old enough, and there wasn’t anything too significant that happened here.
She ran her hands along the mantel over the fireplace, thinking about the gorgeous family portraits she could take there.
It’s ultimately up to you, Robin.
Jake ran his hands through his blonde hair and pulled on the banister to see how sturdy it was. But you did put a lot of work into your current studio.
That’s true. I spent a lot of money just on paint. And I’d have to shut my business down for a week or two while I moved everything over here. It wouldn’t be so bad if I could just do a little bit at a time, but Jason said he needs my building for the new business that wants to move in.
Did he say what business that is?
Robin shook her head. I guess they’re wanting to keep things private, but they’re willing to pay a higher rent than I am for my place.
She frowned. He can’t make me move if I don’t want to, but I also don’t want to be the one responsible for stopping a new business from coming to town. We need all the commerce we can get.
"That’s true, but you can’t take the whole town onto your shoulders. This place is nice, but it’s ultimately up to you and what you think
