Dr. Tatum, Seth, Pound, Cindy
*
Pound sat on the squeaky bunk with his hands folded together in his cold cell, and he grimaced with anger as he clenched his hands together for warmth. He was ticked off about several things, but mostly, he was angry that he could not do anything to stop STUN from taking Sherry away for interrogation. He knew what was going to happen to her, and he wished with all his might that he could have stopped it from taking place. He thought that it was not fair that he had never gotten the chance to know Sherry better before her supposed death in the battle with Drakthos. Now that she was alive again, he had been afraid to be anything more than colleagues. She had seemed so aloof and cold, which was not exactly how he had remembered her before. She was different, changed somehow, and he feared that Sherry was not the same person he had known in the past. In a way, this belief comforted him slightly because maybe, just maybe, she was strong enough to endure whatever plans STUN had for her. After all, she had frozen the soldiers in place in the cave, an ability that he never remembered her having. It was very possible that she could protect herself, and his worrying about her security may be an unproductive effort.
Still, I have feelings for her,
he admitted to himself, and he gritted his teeth together as he imagined her sitting in a wooden school chair with her hands tied behind her back. Why he imagined a wooden school chair, he had no idea, maybe he associated it with school punishment. But then he imagined Wither slapping her across the face, and that pissed him off.
I’ll get Wither for this,
he growled, and he got to his feet and marched back in the forth in the cell to try to get his mind on something different. If only there was a tree nearby with which to talk,
he said to himself. His recent experience in the Sierra Nevada Mountains had taught him that his ability to bring trees to life was limited by his own ability to speak their local language. He had only limited success in getting a couple of small trees and a bush to react, and he knew that would never be enough to win a real battle with STUN. He looked around himself, and all that he could see was concrete, stone, and metal. It was then that he decided that he could not depend solely on his own special abilities. He would need to rely on the other things available to him. He resolved to use wits and teamwork rather than his powers to survive. He went to the door of the cell, and before he could call out to his friends, an alarm sounded through the hall. Flashing lights reflected off the ceilings, and sirens blared out and echoed off the solid white walls. He could see Dr. Tatum down the hall, but Cindy and Seth were in cells on the same side of the hall as he was, making it nearly impossible to see them.
Hey, Doc!
he yelled at Dr. Tatum over the alarm, and she looked his way. Any luck getting out of here?
She shook her head, and he gave her a smirk in return. She grabbed the bars of the opening, and she yelled across the hall to Cindy.
Cindy! Cindy!
she yelled, and though Pound could not see her in the adjacent cell, the teenager must have come to the window of her cell because Dr. Tatum stopped calling her name. They’ve taken Sherry for interrogation, and we will be next,
she explained. If we don’t break out now, we may never have a chance of escape.
What are you asking me for? I don’t know how to break out,
Cindy said.
Sure, you do,
Dr. Tatum encouraged her. "You told me before that your skin is rock hard, and you can use that fact to break out. Go to the back of your cell, and then run at the
