    Agnarr, a Viking of the ancient world, has been raiding the shores of Northumbria for many summers, always paying a tithe to the jarl he serves. But now, hopelessly in debt with a price on his head, he wants to settle down far from the thieving jarl who grows fat on his father's land.

    So he sets his eye on Northumbria. It is everything he's dreamed about, woman, home and hearth. This year he plans to stay and build a longhall of his own.

    But the people of Northumbria, whom he hopes to conquer, have more than Vikings to worry about. They are being driven south by an ancient enemy: the wudewas, man-like demons from the ancient world. And if Agnarr is to make Northumbria his home then he must face them too, uncovering their terrible secrets in the process.
