    Jayce Spencer was riding his fence line, minding his own business, when he heard Hallie Jordon screaming at her pa. He decided he better help her because her pa had beat her ma up and the woman died. When he reined in beside Peek choking Hallie, he grabbed the man, busted his nose, and knocked him out. He felt sorry for Hallie and took her home with him for his Aunt Millie to care for her.

    Hallie was grateful to Jayce and Millie for helping her, but she feared her pa would come and get her and make her go home with him. Her pa arranged for her to become a mail order bride to a gunslinger and she swore she'd never marry him or any strange man.
