About this ebook

The Call starts a chain of events that could get Bob killed. An old friend has people after him that will kill him, and anyone he is near.
“Got to, if I want to keep alive. I need a ride to Austin to attend a funeral Saturday.”
Jim started explaining how to identify the mob that was following us. ... Right out in plain sight. No one would notice unless they looked at their hands, ... A brass colored ring on their trigger finger ...

The guy with three cats hanging off him smiled and stated, “I'll assign him and knife boy to Saul. They'll be well trained or we'll dump their bodies outside.”
“Frederick, are you sure Saul can handle them? “

I laughed and whispered, “Who's him. Never mind. Just report back ...

“You're in trouble, you know.”
“I haven't done anything; yet.”
“Oh you're so wrong. Sharon knows ...
Jim mentioned in a low voice, “Are we already in trouble? Everyone is watching us.”
With a laugh I picked up my coffee bulb and answered him, “When have we never been in trouble since you called me?”

I objected and then heard steps behind me. Before I could move, my arms were pinned. A voice stated, “He used to be a cop, an accident will be easy to arrange. If you want we can take care of the woman to, that way she can't talk.”
“Alexis, you know she hates me, she won't talk. She'll probably throw a party.” Sharon started to open her mouth, but stopped when I shook my head. Then I knew I had some feelings for her. Looking at her I saw a tear in her eye.

“Bob, the Flying Dutchman was an Earth ghost ship. We better check to see if we really still have that water.” mumbled Sharon over her suit radio. ...
“No Alexis, Flying Dutchman was painted right below the pirate flag on its bow. All four of us saw ...

Stephen Brandon

I've loved westerns and science fiction since I picked up my first book at the public library. I've been writing on my computer for years. I never planned on any of my stories being published, just to be read by myself, family, and friends. The base journal is on forty spreadsheets with links to about a thousand files of short one day paragraphs plus other stories. {My claim to fame, written by someone else. Thanks.} "As an earthbound retiree, Stephen writes mostly science fiction and short stories. He is a voracious reader and has written for a few years, publishing his stories on Smashwords."

    The Call

The call took me by surprise. After all, who expects to hear from an acquaintance from years ago. Jim, always was mysterious. He'd been in the unit for over a year when I arrived. He didn't hang with anyone. No one went out of their way to make friends with him. I was even told twice he was bad news.

I remember several times when he surprised me. Once was in Tokyo when several of us were given weekend passes. Several of us were in a bar drinking when one of the guys patted the waitress on the bottom. She turned and slapped him, then went to the bar. We were all laughing at him, because he got off with only a red mark on his cheek. We were half lit when we left. I guess that should have been a warning. A gang jumped us as we passed the first alley. We were to drunk to fight, but managed to knock several of them down before their knives came out. When I was cut on the arm and fell, that was the first time I noticed Jim following us. In a few quick steps he was on the gang from the rear. His knife must have been sharp, because he sliced two of them before they made a sound. Looking up, I saw them turn as a group, and then run. Jim was gone when the cops arrived with the shore patrol.

My drinking buddies and I got busted one grade, that put me even with Jim. Top asked us if anyone else was there, but no one said anything. After formation the next morning I thanked Jim and all he did was shrug. I even offered to buy him a drink, he refused.

Several months later I was headed toward the DMZ with hot chow for the guard post when someone opened fire on the jeep. My driver was hit. I grabbed the wheel, and like the klutz I was, I managed to crash. Two figures in camouflage appeared on my side of the jeep as I fell out. The shots aimed for me caught the driver. Behind them a figure rose out of the mist and cut both their throats. I saw Jim put his knife in my hand just before I passed out. The next morning in the hospital the sergeant
