Bitten - Clement Scott
Prologue
It was a warm, balmy evening in Sprigglytown, Tennessee. Greg the Hermit had just settled down on his porch after a hard day of making old-fashioned wooden toys to sell at the flea market.
It was Greg’s favorite part of the day. He loved sitting outside of his log cabin, which he had built himself, and enjoying the solitude of the mountains. He didn’t even listen to any music. He preferred the sound of the crickets. He didn’t need a television either. He was much more interested in the activities of the wild animals in his own backyard. There were squirrels, turkeys, deer, and sometimes even bears!
That night, though, Greg was lucky enough to see something far more interesting than squirrels. Right as it was getting dark outside, Greg saw a flaming object fall from the sky, not far from his own home.
He gave his Irish wolfhound, Dude, a pat on the head and said in his southern drawl, What in tarnation was that? Let’s go check that out, ya want to, ol’ Dude? It looks like it landed near the thinking rock. Maybe the aliens have finally come. We could be on TV!
Dude panted and licked his lips in agreement, so Greg got his flashlight and his shotgun just in case there was any trouble. Then the two set off into the woods. They were careful not to fall into one of the many sinkholes that surrounded Greg’s cabin. Luckily, Greg knew the woods like the back of his hand.
Soon, Greg and Dude came to a clearing in the woods. In the middle of the clearing was an oddly chair-shaped rock that Greg referred to as his thinking rock
because he liked to go sit on it and think. Sitting beside the thinking rock was another, smaller rock that Greg had never seen there before. When he reached out to touch it, he noticed it was warm, but other than that, there wasn’t much interesting about it.
As they were about to turn around and leave, Greg felt a small sting on his upper arm.
Darn ‘skeeters!
He slapped at the bug that had landed on him, and then took a look at it. It was kind of funny looking: rather large and green.
Skeeters is gettin’ big,
Greg told his dog. Must be somethin’ in the water.
Chapter 1
Professor Dawn Morgan sighed and shook her head as she sat in front of the television grading tests. She had no idea how some of these students made it to an advanced biology class. The only three people who passed were her three favorite students: Joan Crosby, Art Wilson, and Maria Sparks. She thanked the stars that it was early in the semester. Students had a tendency to start out weak and then end strong because later in the semester they obsessed over finals.
Somewhat burnt out with the grading process, Dr. Morgan decided to take a break and watch TV. Even college professors needed mind-numbing entertainment sometimes, although Dawn rarely had time for such things. She usually put work first, so much so that some people considered her to be boring. Nonetheless, she did have a favorite TV show, a simple yet funny sitcom about a single mom called Patricia’s Problems. Sadly, Patricia’s Problems was over until next season, so Dawn had to settle on reruns, which put her to sleep within minutes.
The following morning, Dr. Morgan woke up on the couch to her cat Sikes meowing loudly. With no husband or children, that cat was the only individual the professor had to answer to. And answer, she did. She didn’t even need an alarm clock in her life. That cat woke her up at the same time every day.
